I gasp as Trap drops to one knee, but Hoodoo doesn’t let up, bringing his knee into Trap’s jaw again. My stomach tightens, knowing this will only anger Selene further as she grits her teeth. But suddenly, Trap races forward, grabbing Hoodoo around the waist and ramming him back, where they both fall to the ground. Hoodoo moans loudly as his back hits a small log.

“Hoodoo!” I call out, Selene chuckling to herself while the two guys roll around on the pebbled ground.

“Dammit, Selene, call your mongrel off!” I scream at her as he moves over the top of Hoodoo, slamming his fist into his face.

I wince as Selene steps up to me and gently whispers in my ear, “See, sweetheart… no one can protect you from your fate.”

I swallow, my stomach churning as Hoodoo takes another blow to the face. I grimace, rushing over and jumping on Trap’s back to get him off, but all he does is push me with such force my body flies down onto my ass, my palms grazing the pebbles as I try to catch myself. “Hoodoo!” I call out as Raid, Omen, and Hurricane race out from the side of the clubhouse.

“Stop!” Hurricane yells as they bound up to Hoodoo and Trap. Hurricane grabs the back of Trap’s shirt and hoists him up and off Hoodoo like a rag doll. His arms flail about as he continues to keep trying to punch Hoodoo into the middle of next week but without much luck.

Omen tends to Hoodoo, helping him up while Raid squats beside me, checking me over.

I raise my brow at him, subtly asking him if he was able to get anything from Selene’s cell. He shakes his head infinitesimally, and a wave of disappointment flows through me as my shoulders automatically slump.

He slowly helps me to stand, and I weakly smile at him, letting him know it’s okay because that is all I can manage right now.

“The fuck do you think you’re doin’ comin’ into my clubhouse expectin’ us to take care ofyourmess and then attackin’ my people?” Hurricane grunts, getting right up in Trap’s face.

Trap chuckles, shoving away from Hurricane and straightening out his shirt. “Didn’t mean anything by it. Just two men shooting the shit.”

Hoodoo snorts out his disapproving response as I move over to his side. I can already tell by the way he’s standing that his back is hurting. “You delivered what you needed to for Cain… it’s time for you both to leave,” I suggest.

Selene raises her brow at me like she’s impressed I have the guts to push back.

Hurricane folds his arms over his chest and nods in agreement. “And if you come past those clubhouse gates again, you make damn sure you know that we protect our own. You come after any one of ours, we’ll come back fuckin’ harder on you and yours. Got it!”

Trap turns up his nose.

Selene simply smirks, unperturbed by any of Hurricane’s words. Her eyes lock with mine, and she leans in a little closer. “I’ll be seeing you…reeealsoon, Maxxy. And you better be ready to work for me and the Bachelors, or there’s gonna be trouble with a capital T.”

Hurricane snorts out a laugh. “You think after the shit you just pulled, we’re lettin’ Maxxy come over to you? You got another thing comin’, lady. You better come at us with somethin’ more than what you’re offerin’, or this deal is off the table… Maxxy’s goin’ nowhere.”

My eyes widen as Selene chuckles. “That’s not how this works, Hurricane… I’m the one with the evidence on her. I’m the one with the leverage. I hold the cards firmly in my hand. Shouldn’tshebe choosing how this plays out, not you?”

He curls up his lip. “Maxxy’s part of Defiance. She willalwaysbe part of Defiance. She stays here. You wanna shoot your shot, you go for it. We’ll take you fuckin’ down with us.”

“He just sealed your fate, Maxxy…” Selene smirks, her eyes shifting to me. “Enjoy your last days as a free woman.”

Selene and Trap turn, both walking for the exit.

Once they’re out of hearing range, Hoodoo turns to Raid, desperation in his eyes. “Tell me you got something.”

Raid exhales somberly. “Nothing. Her cell is locked down tight as a nun’s ass. I even tried to get into Trap’s, and his is the same. Clearly, they don’t want anyone breaking into their shit.”

I turn to Hurricane and throw my hands into the air in exasperation. “Whatwasthat? We still had time. Now she’s likely to release the footage just to spite me.”

Hurricane rolls his shoulders to relieve the tension in them. “She won’t. She wants to see you suffer. She wants you at the Bachelors. That bitch won’t release shit. She wants you to hand yourself over to them, but Iwon’tlet that happen. Raid is gonna have to find a way to source that footage, or… we’re gonna have to turn on our allies and take out the Baton Rouge Bachelors, but that is ourlastresort. That happens at the eleventh hour because Cain has always been good to us, and even though Trap and Selene are bad seeds… Cain is not.”

“And what if she does release the footage, Hurricane? Are you going to be able to protect me in jail?” I ask, tightening my grip on Hoodoo.

Hurricane reaches out, placing his hand on my shoulder. “That’s not gonna happen, Max. I promise. I’ve seen people like Selene all too often. They wanna witness their victim’s pain in person. So sendin’ you to prison is not her endgame. She wants you at the Bachelors so she can see you sufferin’ firsthand. She’s not releasin’ that footage because then… she loses.”

It makes sense.

And it does sound like Selene.

I just can’t help that small seed of doubt stewing in my brain that tells me this is my last night as a free woman. That this time tomorrow, I’m going to be back behind bars.
