“It’s not?”

“I’m afraid not. Car’s totaled. Engine took in too much water and fried the engine control module.”

“Like total loss?”

“Yup. Like I said, wish I had better news for you. There are some parts I can salvage. Let me do some research to see how much I can sell them for, and I can give you a price of what I can pay you for the car if she decides not to go through insurance.”

“Thanks, Bill. Appreciate it.”

I hung up and let out a breath. Glancing at the screen, I debated calling Quinn, then decided against it. I’d rather tell her in person.

I headed back into the facility.

“You look like someone kicked your puppy,” Rhone said when I returned.

“That was Bill over at the garage. Quinn’s car is totaled.”

“Oh, that sucks. And if Bill says it’s totaled, it’s totaled. He brought Sutton’s car back from the dead so many times. That thing has two hundred and fifty thousand miles on it, but it’s still going thanks to Bill.”

“Yeah, now I have to figure out how to get her a new car. I doubt she’d let me buy her one.”

“Whoa.Buyher one? I know we’re all pretty well off, and you make a shit ton more than me—for now—but buying someone a car is a big deal.”

“It’s just money.”

“Just money? Don’t let Sutton hear you talk like that. Just because you have it doesn’t mean its value is any less to others. I imagine to someone like Quinn, it’s a big deal. She didn’t even want to drive your fancy schmancy car because it’s worth too much.”

“I know, which is why I need to figure out how to fix this.”

“Maybe it’s not your problem to fix.” Rhone hauled an empty barrel toward the interns who were getting ready to learn about the barreling process.

“How’s everything going?” Chardonnay asked, her heels click-clacking across the stone floor. A white collared shirt with short sleeves was tucked into a navy-blue pencil skirt that hit just above her knees.

“Everything’s going fine. What brings you from your office?”

She glanced at the planner she always had in hand. “I’m checking in on the interns, making sure everything is running smoothly.” Chardonnay couldn’t help herself. She had to have her nose in every aspect of the business.

“We have a great set of interns this year, all eager and willing to learn while also not afraid to get their hands dirty.”

“Good.” She tucked her brown hair behind her ear. “I revamped the application process, so we could eliminate those who weren’t up to par.”

“You didn’t tell me that. As someone who picks the interns, I think you should have informed me of the change.” She might have been VP of Operations, but I was the Wine Making Director and head wine maker. Decisions like that should run through me before being implemented.

“Why? It worked and whether or not you knew, it didn’t matter. You’re welcome.”

I gritted my teeth, cutting off words I’d regret.

“I had an interesting conversation with Addy.”

I shook my head and let out a stilted laugh. “So that’s why you’re here. Leave it alone, Char.”

“Do you know anything about this nanny of yours? Mom said you didn’t run a background check.”

“I said leave it alone.”

“Since you’re being careless, obviously blinded by tits and a smile, I searched her for you.”

Anger rose but was quickly overtaken by shock. “You did what?”
