“I think it’s in the door pocket.” Josh’s voice made her heart prance.

She found her phone and answered it without a second to spare.

It was Gabe. “Where are you?”

“I have no idea, somewhere between Gatlinburg and Knoxville.”

“That’s specific.”

“I was asleep. Josh is driving.”

“I don’t want you to stay at your house tonight.”

“Why?”

“I would think that is obvious. I kind of like the idea of my sister being alive.”

“Eh. You have another one.”

“Yeah, but Lydia isn’t as cool as you.”

“Aren’t you sweet? I can’t stay at the farm. Mom will go nuts when she hears about this morning.”

“She will, but I don’t want you alone, and I think Josh would agree with me.”

She looked across to the driver’s seat. The glow of the dashboard illuminated Josh’s face.

He asked, “What is it?”

“Gabe says I shouldn’t sleep tonight.”

Gabe’s voice came across the speaker. “That’s not what I said.”

She switched Gabe to speaker phone. “Yeah, that’s what not sleeping in my own bed will result in.”

“You can stay at Mom and Dad’s. Or my place is always an option. Your choices are limitless.”

She slumped back against the seat.

Josh reached over and took her free hand. “Your brother’s right.”

“See?” Gabe’s pointed word made Chloe shake her head.

“Fine. I guess I should stay at Mom and Dad’s, since they at least have a bed for me.”

“Actually, Aliza and the kids decided to move in a day early. Apparently, the movers are coming tomorrow, not Thursday.”

“So it’s a couch either way? Guess I’ll come to your house. Is the paint dry?”

“It smells a little less today.”

“How would you know? You’ve been working all day.” She giggled.

“Touché.”

They arranged to meet back at Chloe’s house to get the things she’d need, and then the three of them would grab dinner together before dropping Josh off at home and heading to Gabe’s.

Something wasn’t right, but Josh couldn’t figure out what. After putting down his backpack, he switched the light on in his living room. Chloe had dropped him off and didn’t drive away until he was in the house, but as soon as he was inside, a check formed in his gut.
