Poirot barked.
“You weren’t supposed to agree with me. Go get Gabe.”
Poirot barked.
“Gabe.”
He barked again and took off. She’d worked with Poirot on finding Gabe specifically, even in a large family gathering, since she’d first brought the little runt home.
Two minutes later, Poirot came back, dragging Gabe’s shirt by the sleeve but no Gabe.
“You’re missing something.”
“I’m here.” Gabe walked into the room.
“I need a bath towel,” she said.
“Sure.” He disappeared and came back with a fluffy blue towel a moment later.
“Thank you.”
But Gabe didn’t give it to her. “How did Poirot get hurt?”
She told him about Poirot slipping because she was distracted and thought there was a drop-off.
“It’s not like you to be distracted. See, you really do like Josh.”
She rolled her eyes at her brother. “It’s not like that. We ran into a brother and sister who lost their other brother to the woods. Josh and I were on the team that found him, but we didn’t get there soon enough.”
“Bet that brought up thoughts about Owen.”
“Probably. Can I have my towel now so I can take a shower? I’m exhausted.”
“Before you shower and go to bed, can I ask you something else?” Gabe asked.
“You could, but I don’t know if I’ll have a satisfactory answer.”
Gabe laughed. “You never do.”
She crossed her arms and leaned back against the kitchen counter. “What?”
“Have you told Josh about Owen?”
The urge to grab the toaster off the counter and chuck it at Gabe’s head was almost irresistible.
“I’ll take that as ano.”
She fought to keep her lip from quivering.
“Oh, Chloe.” He put the towel on the counter and came to her, wrapping his arms around her.
“Well, he does know I suffer from panic attacks now.”
“What happened?” He removed his arms and propped his hip against the counter next to her.
She told him about the hat and Josh’s awesomeness at calming her down and getting her hat without her losing her mind completely.
“He’s a good fit for you.”
