‘Both stubborn?’

Tiff nodded.

‘Both generous?’

Tiff blushed and nodded.

‘Would you have forgiven her?’ Kim asked.

‘Of course.’

‘So why wouldn’t you think she’s forgiven you?’

‘I dunno. I just…’

‘And what about the other thing? The thing you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t found the courage, which applies to most people by the way.’

‘You’ll laugh.’

‘Try me.’

‘Apply to CID.’

Kim said nothing.

‘See what I mean.’

‘I’m waiting for the funny bit,’ Kim said, raising an eyebrow. ‘Why would I laugh?’

‘Cos this is me; Tiff, Tink, a police officer that does great with lost kids and domestic disputes. I’m chirpy and I give good directions.’

‘And you’ve helped us solve three different murder investigations,’ Kim reminded her, not liking the opinion the girl had of herself.

‘Nah, I didn’t do—’

‘What are you scared of, Tink?’ Kim interrupted.

‘Failing. Not being good enough.’

‘I mean in life,’ Kim said.

Tiff thought for a minute and then shook her head. ‘Nothing.’

‘Exactly. You’re pretty fearless. Ain’t nothing we’ve thrown at you that you haven’t been prepared to catch with both hands. Not sure I’ve ever heard you say that you can’t do something. I don’t know what your gran would say, but as someone who has worked with you, I’d tell you to go for it.’

‘You would?’ she asked with her wide cartoon-character eyes.

‘I’d have you on my team any day,’ Kim said and meant it.

Kim watched as Tiff’s eyes grew watery. She shifted from one foot to the other. Jeez, there was something about this kid that got to her.

‘So, you all good?’

A wide, tremulous smile. ‘Yeah, boss, I’m all good. And thank you.’

Kim nodded and headed out of the locker room.

She had one more place she had to go.
