“Where do we find a surgeon in this mess?” Dottie asks.

“I know someone,” Kiva says. “Don’t worry, Sadie. He’s a shifter. They can heal almost anything. Plus, he’s in good shape. Just check out all the muscles. Even Stone doesn’t—”

“Fly faster,” I interrupt. “Stop staring at his naked body, and concentrate on getting him to safety so a surgeon can treat him.”

We hit the ground, and it’s anything but a smooth landing.

Stone rushes forward to help us. “What happened?”

“Someone shot him with an arrow,” I answer.

“A silver arrowhead?” he asks, glancing at Kiva’s wings.

“Don’t know.” The lump in my throat burns. Damnit, I cannot cry right now. “It’s still inside him.”

He helps us get Nolan inside the cabin that the Syndicate loaned him as a marshal. Weird, his captain isn’t staying in one of the cabins. I push the thought aside and focus on getting Nolan flat on the floor since Stone suggests it’s the best place.

Kiva kisses her mate’s cheek. “Come on, Dottie. Let’s get the only person in town who can treat this. I just hope she’s sober enough.”

I don’t have time to ask questions as they’re flying out the door. Stone brings blankets and boils hot water. “You seem to have experience with this kind of thing,” I tell him.

“Our pack lived in the middle of nowhere. We learned basic first aid and medic skills.” Which explains why Kiva knew to leave the arrowhead in and how to position Nolan for the flight.

“I thought we were backwards here without police and a fire department. We need to work on getting fire fighters if the Syndicate doesn’t shut us down.” I’m rambling because it’s better than sobbing over Nolan as I keep pressure on the wound.

“About that,” Stone says. “It’s not looking good for the future of Syn City. Whoever bombed the hotel? According to people seeking shelter at the school right now, they just hit the House of Muses, House of Nymphs, and House of Furies.”

“What?” I flinch because I’m trained to immediately go to the House of Furies if it comes under any kind of attack, but I can’t leave Nolan.

“The Furies have it handled. Your coach told the retired Furies to stay put in the staff quarters and homes. You can’t help them, and he needs you now.”

“I’m not sure about that.” I duck my head. “He picked the marshals over me.”

“Because he’s trying to think with wolf brain which runs at idiot pace, but he took off to find you the second your mating bond faltered. They’re usually so damn screw the world selfish yet he panicked at the thought of losing you. That’s how a mate’s supposed to act. It was his instinct kicking in.”

“And it got him shot.” I was the reason he was there. My botched spell got him into this mess. Guilt slams into me.

“Can you read anything coming off him?” Stone asks.

“No. I accidentally severed our mating connection.”

Stone blinks at me with his dark bear eyes. “How? I didn’t think that was possible.”

“I asked the magic to stop my hurt, and poof, no more pretty colors.”

“Because he was being a dumbass and not treating you as a mate should. Maybe he’ll learn a lesson from this.”

“If he lives,” I whisper.

“He’ll live. Wolves are stubborn like that.”

I don’t mention Nolan’s other animal. No one knows, and I’m keeping it that way. Besides, foxes are supposed to be smart and good at surviving, right? “Don’t die on me,” I tell him.

The few minutes that Kiva and Dottie are gone crawl by like an eternity. When they return with a Mad Mae in tow, I almost drop my hold on Nolan’s chest to block the woman.

“No. No way,” I say. “You’re not drugging him up with anything.”

The Mad Mae grins at me, the lines around her dark eyes deepening. “You’ll change your mind when he starts screaming. A little pain relief never hurt anyone.”
