Itshouldhave.

Except…

She couldn’t get hurt for me. I couldn’t…

I grabbed her and—with all my waning strength—turned us both so I could shield her with my body.

The movement set off a reaction in the cage.

The suspended moment of stillness shattered, and I could sense one alpha move, about to strike again—the energy in this cage as familiar as the beat of my heart.

Below me, she was breathless. Golden eyes, brighter than I'd believed possible, were desperate.

“N-no!”she moaned. Tears flooded her face, as she grappled with my cheeks, speaking—no,begging…

I reached out to her, knowing I needed her closer. I needed to—but before I could seize her and drag her close, pain split my side and I was jolted into the cage, crashing violently into the heavy metal bars.

One pulse of my heart beat.

Two.

Three.

The world was reforming. Not quite right. Something was… something was missing.

She was gone.

My breath came ragged.

The fresh raspberry bushes, the fury, the sweetness, the morning dew and cool soil, her golden eyes.

Gone.

I was left, fingers halfway curled through her hair, the desperate motion I’d been making to drag her tighter against my chest.

Too late.

Vex was limp in my arms, eyes peaceful and closed, glistening crimson blossoming rapidly through the roots of her hair.

DRAKE

She shouldn’t have been faster than both me and Ebony, auras out, my heart almost gave out as I saw the scene before me.

I’d never seen Love like this, Ebony was dragging him from an alpha trying to unlock the cage. Instead, he threw himself bodily against the bars, a low snarl loosing from his chest.

And then—far too late—the door was opened. Love was through before any of us, but I was on his heels.

The two alphas were there. One was towering over Rook and Vex. Love wrenched him back and slammed him against the wall of the cage. Security swarmed in, dragging him off, barring the other alpha as I crashed to my knees before Rook and Vex.

She was…oh my God.

She was—

Another snarl erupted from Rook’s chest as I reached for her, panic making it hard to think straight, and then he was drawing back, still curled over her to keep her protected as his free hand closed around my throat.

“Rook!” I gasped. But he wasn’t there.

My brother wasn’t there.
