I shook my head, holding her so tightly it must have hurt, but she didn’t say anything. Instead, she took my chin in her hand and drew me to face her.
“I’m fine,” I told her.
“I think you’re scared.”
I had no answer to that.
“I’d take your love,” she whispered. “However it looks.”
“I don’t…”
Fuck.
She was right.
This was fear. Rare and goddamned suffocating.
Insecurities were drowning me, something I wasn’t used to. “You won’t want me.” My voice was rough.
She was going to see me like this, and then, when the bite faded, when I was the monster she was bonded to…
Again, her lips curved up at the corners, and with it, the ache that had been weighing me down also lifted. “Kiss me. And don’t tell me what I want, Ebony Starless.”
I drew her close, fingers weaving through her hair, and drew her into a kiss. As her lips found mine, I found courage, just like she’d come to me for.
“Do it again, Vex,” I breathed, asking for the very thing my fears had been telling me to flee. “Sing for me.”

EBONY
The low sound of Vex’s lullaby changed me. The bite wouldn’t last, but the things I was feeling while we were connected, they would. It was the most incredible high I’d ever had.
We didn’t do anything other than lay in each other's arms. It wasn’t what I’d imagined would happen the first time I made a real connection with my mate, but it was enough.
Until it wasn’t.
Until the very weakness I saw in others reared its head.
After what felt like forever, she got up, something anxious in her eyes. “I’ll be back.”
Then she vanished into the bathroom.
I frowned, not sure what to read into her nerves until the phone in my pocket buzzed. Not mine.
The proxy.
My blood chilled as I tugged it out.
I’d forwarded the texts her pack lead had sent last night. She hadn’t, it seemed, checked them until now.
Until she saw you,a little voice whispered.
I scrolled up, reminding myself of the last text. It had been a lot less chilling when I’d last read it.
