“I attended an opening.”

“The neighbourhood outside those clinics have the highest rates of heat entrapment in the whole city. Predators wait for omegas nearing heat who can’t get a spot—and there aresomany who can’t. But at home, I know I have the drugs. Wouldyoutoss that coin?”

He stared at me for an age, his jaw ticking as he processed what I’d said.

Finally, he nodded. “Okay. I understand. I failed. I should have pushed for more clinics so you were safer.”

“You’re… going to do that?” I asked, heart lifting.

“Why?” He frowned at me. “You’re safe. I don’t have any more mates.”

My nostrils flared, and a growl rose in my chest before I could catch it.

He cocked his head, a smile playing on his lips. “That’s very cute.”

“You’re going to set up more clinics,” I said.

“Am I?” If it wasn’t Ebony, I’d swear the smile on his lips was playful. “What do I get for that, Little Omega?” he asked. “I’ll need a lot of convincing.”

EBONY

I found her waiting in my room later.

That was odd, because I was sure by the way her eyes had darkened when I’d made the comment about the clinic that I’d screwed up. She’d stared at me for a long moment, then dropped the pout and dismissed me from her nest.

Now, I was frozen in my tracks, staring at a fucking siren in my bed.

I’m going to need a lot of convincing.

That’s what I’d said.

Fucking lies.

I’d set up a thousand clinics across the city if it meant she would do this for me every night.

Once, when doing my own stunt at the edge of a cliff for a movie, I’d looked down and believed my harness wasn’t attached. For one ice cold moment, my heart had felt like it tripped over itself, believing I was definitely about to die. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’d been afraid, but the thrill had been memorable.

Somehow, that was exactly what I felt right now, staring at Vex waiting in my room like a queen.

It tripped over itself a number of times, in fact, and when that mischievous smile spread across her face as she drank in my expression, it was like my heart clawed at my rib cage.

It was hotter becauseno oneentered my room except her, and she certainly didn’t do it without me. But she was reclined on the edge of my bed, tantalising black lace clinging to her skin.

I strode toward her, every goddamned instinct in my body screaming at me.

Bite her.

Claim her.

I drew up, chest heaving, right in front of my bed.

Something halted me. The same thing that had halted me every time. The bond I hated putting a name to, stopping me. It was a thing Iknew, but couldn’t feel. But even if I couldn’t see it, or touch it, I knew it was there as surely as I knew Drake’s stupid fucking 2005 minivan was down in the garage right now, rusting in the same air as my Lamborghini.

“You came in here without me,” I said.

Her smile widened, and she tangled her ankles together, drawing her knees up playfully as she leaned back on her elbows.

Her claim—the bite on my neck—had faded in a day. But I wanted her again, however she’d let me have her.
