Then she buckled, and raspberry treacle flooded the room like a drug, setting off every alpha instinct in me.

“No.” My voice was gravel as I caught her.

No.

“E-Ebony.” Her voice trembled with far too much fear for someone so brave.

No.

Not now.

Her heat.

Her heat had hit.

But that meant… They were going to take her back, and I—

“I’m scared.” Her face crumpled, her breathing picking up.

I needed more time. There was something caught in my throat. Ineededa third answer.

But there was no more time.

“E-Ebony.” Her voice shook.

I hadn’t moved. She was shaking in my arms, and I’d done nothing.

She was mine, and she wasn’t. She… she never would be.

I couldn’t win.

Not unless…

Those beautiful golden eyes glittered with tears, staring at me. Trusting me.

I blinked, and the third, and final door appeared before me: The last option.

The one I’d never had before her. I didn’t know if it was victory, it didn’tfeellike that. But it wasn’t loss, either.

It was something else.

Something new…

And maybe… maybe it would be enough.

The last gift to break. The black necklace: it would be no more.

“Bite me,” I whispered.

“What?”

“I need your bite.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I made you a promise,” I told her, drawing her chin up and steadying her. She clutched my wrists, her breathing ragged.

Before now, promises had meant so little. I could lie with ease, could treat the world however I wished in order to get what I wanted. And yet now, in a game where there was no victory, everything else shifted onto a playing field I’d never seen.
