“He wants water,” I muttered, ducking around him.

When I exited the bathroom, I hated the sight that met me just as much as I hated the sight of Zeus. Triton was seated on the side of my bed, topless, his chestnut waves framing his cruel smile. “See, you can’t keep her all to yourself, Zeus.”

I fixed my gaze on the floor as I reached him, having seen enough of the delight in his eyes as he watched me follow commands.

He didn’t take the water from me straight away. “What do you think? Will she have a better gag reflex than Drake?”

The silence turned to a high pitched ringing.

Drake?

I looked up at him, the full truth settled into place. Drake’s fear. The past that haunted him.

Andthispack.

Reality crashed in, a cresting wave of crystal shattering against marble. And it felt like I shattered with it.

DRAKE

I spun as I felt Ebony’s aura split the air. He had frozen, staring down into Vex’s bottom drawers that he’d been digging through.

“What?” I asked, crossing toward him. He stood, chest heaving, and I saw a large IV bag in each fist.

“Heat drugs,” he sounded furious. “Black market.”

“How can you tell?” I asked, peering at the bags.

“The Trograst—it speeds the heat to a day, but it’s so dangerous it’s banned. Why would she—?”

“If she’s self administering,” I cut in. “Means she’s out cold. Can’t have an IV running on yourself for too long. Risk is too high.”

“Thesedrugs could kill her,” Ebony snarled. “Is she too good for the free clinics? What the fuck was she thinking?”

I opened my mouth, then shut it, truly taking Ebony in. “She’s not stupid,” I said, putting a hand on his arm. “If she didn’t go, there was a reason.”

Ebony flinched back. “Likewhat? Our money funds those clinics. What are they there for if my mate is using this shit instead?”

His fist closed around the bag and it burst, flooding the room with a strong iron-like scent before he flung the sopping plastic at the wall.

Shit.

I’dneverseen Ebony crack like this. But then in the drawer, beside where he’d found the drugs, I spotted a stack of papers. They were all PSA posters with Ebony’s face. It was one of his campaigns about gold pack safety.

We only stayed a little longer, waiting on Love to sort arrangements to have her stuff brought home. Since we hadn’t expected to find anything of hers, we didn’t have the boxes to pack it all up.

“Did you find anything useful?” I asked, looking to Ebony. I wasn’t sure what he’d been looking for.

He was tense, bag of drugs still clutched in his hand, but he didn’t reply.

“Maybe we should ask around before we go,” I said as Rook shut the door to Vex’s room. I examined the space and my eyes fell on the door that had cracked open as we passed—the one with the red-haired omega within.

Love caught me by the shoulder as I made for it. “He looked nervous.”

“He’s an omega. If she trusted anyone, it was him.”

I knocked on the door, then took a step back, waiting.

There was a long pause, and nothing happened. I tried again.
