“He knows,” Zeus whispered. “Now, what do you think they’re going to do?”

ROOK

Cancel the Dragon Hunters contract?

We were right in the middle of the interview, and they’d finally replied with a demand, and a promise that they would send her back.

It should have been the greatest relief in the world after days of this torture, except that the instructions were for me—not any of the others.

Only… let go of the Dragon Hunters franchise?

Our big break.

But Love’s decision had come instantly.

Love: Rook, you’re fucking doing it. No arguments.

Panic rose in my chest, making it hard to focus. I’d never had stage fright before in my life. I loved the spotlight, and the cameras, but as I looked up at the interviewer, I froze.

It was only last night that I’d been staring at another camera. Drake was right, that was a mistake, and what I’d done hadn’t been missed. It was why the instructions were for me.

Would we have had her back already if I hadn’t?

I opened my mouth, knowing I was supposed to do something. I was supposed to fix this.

But I was the one who’d broken it.

I was the one who had convinced her we would never want her.

I got to my feet in a daze, ripping my mic from my jacket, bile burning my throat. But I didn’t make it one step outside the room before Ebony caught up to me, shoving me against the wall.

“I can’t do this,” I rasped. The world was spinning. I couldn’t focus, but then I felt his hand palming my neck, other fist in my shirt.

“Rook!” He snapped. “Focus.”

I blinked, meeting his raging silver eyes. A wild laugh bubbled up my throat at this foreign affection. Ebony fucking hated me. “You can’t just treat me like I’m Drake and expect it to w-work.”

I saw the flicker of a sneer on his face. “Oh, I’m not, Rook. It’s this, or I’ll put you through a fucking wall on live TV.”

I swallowed, those words straightening my thoughts a little. “I just… I need a moment.”

“I knew you were a piece of shit, Rook, but this is a new low—”

“I want her back,” I rasped. It was the truth. Even faced with losing the greatest opportunity we’d ever been given… it was nothing in the face of getting her back. “I swear, that’s not—”

“Then what is thefuckingissue?”

“I don’t…” Fuck. I wasn’t built for this. I couldn’t… In that moment, I didn’t care that it was Ebony here instead of Love. I could feel myself cracking.

“Why is this happening?” I rasped. “I d-don’t understand. Drake fell for her, y-you and Love wanted to protect her, I can’t be the one to fix it—”

“You know what they’re probably doing to her right now?” Ebony hissed, snapping me from my spiral.

My blood turned to ice, and I opened my mouth to stop him, but he was already speaking. “Right now, your mate is probably gettingfuckedby other alphas. You don’t get to have a breakdown. You’ll go back to that mic, you’ll say the words:‘We are dropping out of the Dragon Hunters franchise’ ,and then you’ll get in the fucking car so we can leave. And if you don’t, I swear I’ll chain you to that Alpha’s Hook in the garden and pry each of your fucking nails off one by one, and I think Drake and Love would be glad to watch.”

My lips were parted slightly by the time he finished.

“Is that clear?” he snarled.
