Footsteps sounded behind me, my pack’s scents filling the air, but I couldn’t take my eyes away, afraid to even blink.

I turned to see Ebony and Rook. Ebony stood a few feet back, but he wasn’t looking at Vex. Rook was behind him, half a step from… I blinked.
I’d not taken in anything other than her.
But Rook stood a foot from a long back limo that was still in the parking lot.
Every instinct switched to high alert, and I was drawing her closer. That’s where she’d just come from.
Could the alphas still be in there?

Love got to his feet, something hateful on his face telling me he was thinking the same thing.
We all were. The bond between us, for the briefest second, was unified with a sickening hatred.

“Please don’t!” Vex’s desperate voice shattered all my instincts to pieces, sending a splintering divide between me and my brothers. She was trying to stand, still shaking. “Don’t!” she begged again as I stood, helping her with me.
“But…” Rook looked lost, lips half parted as he stared at her, still a foot from the limo. “I don’t…” Rook looked to me, to Love, and then to Ebony. I could feel his uncertainty through the bond. His panic, too.
I got it.
A lingering flash of my alpha instincts was still trying to claw out, wondering why Rook hadn’t ripped that door open already.
I wasn’t processing properly.
None of us were.
None of us except Ebony. “We check it,” he said. So fucking sure.
“No!” Vex’s gaze was darting between us all desperately. “You can’t.”
“Why would it still be here?” I asked Ebony, trying to detangle this chaos. “They wouldn’t have stayed.”
Right…
That wouldn’t make sense.
And we couldn’t, not if she’d told us not to.
“Rook,check it,” Ebony growled.
