Would I lose her?

She didn’t seem to think so, but she wasn’t like me.

“I will accept nothing from you if it isn’t real,” she hissed. Her hand was still clamped around my neck, and I lost myself.

I shifted so I was on top of her, delicate neck in my palm as my thumb pressed against her jaw so she couldn’t look away from me. Her breath caught, hair scattered around her on the cushion, eyes wide as she held mine. She wasn’t afraid. Instead, a daring curiosity danced in her eyes, and it was—for a fleeting moment—the first time I’d seen the fear gone.

I’d done that.

My time with her had pulled her from the void entirely.

It was the moment of confidence I needed to forge on, to take this dare of hers and make it into something real.

She was going to understand, though, what it meant. “You’re an omega, Vex. Do you really want someone who can’t offer you the care and attention you crave?”

She frowned, furious. “I’ll have Drake, and Love, and…” She trailed off, not ready to bring Rook into this, yet. She looked determined, though. “I want something real.”

For a single breath, my mind ran away with that idea. I imagined a world where I didn’t have to hide, and she would stay at my side all the same.

Yet… not even Love could tolerate all of me. He saw glimpses behind the veil, enough to turn his stomach and make him never want to look again.

“You’re afraid I won’t want you?” she asked.

I let out a breath, humour in it.

Of course she wouldn’t.

“I don’t know why you would ever ask for that, with what I’ve just offered you.”

“I’ve lived too long hiding what I am to want that for someone I’m supposed to love.”

Love?

And there was the problem.

But it was as if she could see the conflict in my eyes. “There’s a way to make it work,” she whispered. “Or we wouldn’t be mates.”

I wasn’t usually so irrational to wish words to be truth when I knew they weren’t, but I caved. We were so close, her breath tickling my cheek, her silvery hair scattered about her freckled face, bare of makeup and utterly captivating. Eyes of liquid gold dared me to never blink, to never look away for even a moment, lest she turn to smoke.

So fucking beautiful—even more so, in what she was trying to offer me.

“I still… I still haven’t forgiven you,” she whispered. I realised I’d shifted closer, much too transfixed. I understood what her words meant, despite the lust burning in her eyes. She wouldn’t let me close.

Not yet.

“If you don’t want my apology, Vex, I’ll earn your trust back my way.”

“How?”

“Say you want me how I am, and I’m yours. I will burn the world to the ground if anyone dares try to take you from me again.” Her word trumped Love’s. Her word was everything. “They can get on their knees and give you the apology you need, they can be sweet and put you back together piece by piece. But I will be your hound. I will bury the bones of anyone who has ever hurt you.”

She stared at me, completely taken off guard. Her lips were parted, her breathing heavy.

“If that’s… who you are…” She swallowed. “I wantyou.”

I didn’t let her go, a rare moment of worry hit my system.

What if she was wrong?
