But I'm not even strong enough for that.

I didn’t understand.

Would it have been wrong for her to come for what I had, when she had so little? Would I have done that, if our roles were switched?

Ebony dropped the picture back on my nightstand. “Give it back tomorrow.” He stepped away, clearly about to leave.

“She said… she said in those notes… she said she didn’t hate me,” I said. He paused, turning back to me. “I can’t… I can’t get it out of my head… That’s how sweet she is, you know?” I hiccupped again, more violently. “And she is so good… So sweet and caring anddidn’thate me so much that… that she wrote it down.”

“I know, I read them—”

“No. You don’t.Everyword was a choice… and she bled to…”

Ohfuck.

Tears were burning my eyes. In front of Ebony. Not that I could stop fucking talking anyway. “She… she bled to say she didn’t hate me.”

“I don’t think that means what you think it means.”

“It means she’s too good for me.”

Ebony snorted. “I stand corrected.”

“You know the difference between what she wrote about me, and what she wrote about all of you?” I asked. “I didn’t get it at first, why she didn’t want my apology, when she let Love in. And then I realised… well… she’d told me—it just took a little time to piece it together. And now… now I can’t stop thinking about it.”

Ebony paused, genuinely curious. “What?”

“She was wrong about what she was afraid of with you, with Love—even the like… six fucking syllables she wrote for Drake. But for me?”

He stared at me, brows furrowed.

“She was right…” I felt the crushing truth of that. My face must have gone a sickly shade because, with a disgusted look on his face, Ebony dumped one of my garbage bins and tossed it at me. I stared into its black depths, next words echoing. “Sheisenough for Love, youdowant to protect her, and Drake does want her. But me? I don’t think… I don’t think she knows that I’m…”

Fuck. Me.

My voice shook. “I don’t think she knows if I’m different from the fucking pricks who bit her.”

Ididn’t know if I was different.

Ebony was staring at me.

“I want you to prove my fears wrong, not give me more,” I said.

“What?” he asked.

“That’s… that’s what she said to me, when she was throwing my apology back in my face—rightfully, obv-obviously. It’s why she can… she can look at you. It’s why she can’t look at me.”

“Are you done?” Ebony asked, folding his arms.

“I think so?”

He turned to leave again. Probably good. I was never going to live this down.

“You know… it was like… I could feel her tonight.”

Ebony paused, glancing back at me.

“That was one hell of an orgasm from Drake. It was like… like I could feel her with them in the bond.”
