Ebony scowled. “Itis…likely that this is about more than money.”

“That still doesn’t tell us why they haven’t asked,” Rook cut in.

“The video you received wasn’t just a taunt,” Leighton said. “They hid their face and masked their voice—they’re hiding, from you or from the law. And they went to the trouble of planting her in your home as a Sweetheart with the intention of getting you to fall for her just so they could rip her away. Yet, all they left was a note and a video without a request.”

“All?”I asked, voice hoarse.

“They have your fated mate in a dark bond. If they wanted to hurt you, it could have been far worse. I doubt this was their ultimate goal.”

“You mean, they changed their plans because we found out she’s gold pack?” Love asked.

“They aborted the moment they found out you cancelled her contract. Perhaps they didn’t believe you cared enough to trade for what they actually want, and it seems personal since they settled for a taunt.”

“So…” Love’s expression was stiff. “We have to convince them we want her back enough to give them what they want?”

“And… do you?” Leighton asked.

My eyes snapped to her, hackles rising, but Leighton didn’t flinch at the hatred levelled on her from everyone in the room. “You need to get yourselves ready. If I’m right, what they want won’t be an easy ask.”

“We’re ready to give them anything,” Love said quietly. “That’s not a question.”

Leighton nodded, glancing at the rest of us, but none of us argued.

“So you think they tracked her from the post?” Ebony asked her.

“It’s possible.”

“Can you do that too?” he asked.

“Already have someone working on it.”

Rook was glancing between them. “Why does it matter if we can track it?”

“It would tell us where she used to live, where she was taken from,” Ebony said. He looked at Leighton. “If you get a location, I want it,” Ebony said. “I’m not trusting anyone else with that.”

Leighton smiled coolly, but nodded, glancing back to Rook. “We’re coming at this from all angles, but if we can find when or how she was taken, we might be able to figure out who has her.”

The world wasn’t right, the room blurring in myvision as the story unravelled in my mind. I tried to stifle the imaginings of Vex making that post, so unsure, then her life crashing down around her because of it.

The phone gallery stared back at me. Vex, with a peaceful look on her face in the local forest walk. This had already happened to her. The dark bond was already on her neck. Ithad been since the moment she’d met us.

All those moments I’d seen a glimmer of sadness or fear in her eyes, and I had no idea she was carrying a burden like this. I could have been more.

I could havedonemore.

Ebony was saying something, but I couldn’t process it.

“…Kinds of enemies we have aren’t ones to stalk forums and turn up at the doorstep of an omega without getting noticed.”

“It’s much more likely she was taken first,” Leighton replied. “Then sold as a gold pack with an established scent match.”

Sold?

The word was like a lead weight, and I was sinking further from the brittle sanity far above.

No.

No one would do something like that to her.
