“Based on your drunken blubbering last night, that’s goingswimminglyisn’t it?” Ebony sauntered further into my room without a care and leaned against my bedpost. “Oh, but it’s worse than that. Vex isn’t just good. She needsyouto be good forher.”

“I just…” I winced, hating that he was the only person that I could talk to right now. “I don’t…” I broke into a wild laugh. “I don’t understand. We have everything.”

“What?” He considered me. “The pack?”

“We’re rich and famous, and we haveeverything.”

He raised his eyebrows, as if wondering where this was going.

“So why…?” I trailed off, trying to figure out what I was trying to say.

“Why what?”

“Why doesn’t itfeellike it? The money, the house, the fame—it’s what everyone wants. We have what everyone wants.”

“Yup.”

“Then why isn’t it enough?”

“Speak for yourself. I’m fine.”

“Because you’re fucking broken!” I snarled. I was striding toward him in a moment, so lost in anger I couldn’t even remember why.

Ebony didn’t flinch as I squared him up, a rather noncommittal look on his face. “Because this is what I knew I wanted,” he said, still fixed on me with interest. “Is this what you always wanted, Harrison? Or is it what you weretoldto want?”

That drew me up, deconstructing the last thing I had that could easily fuel my rage. I was supposed to be sure I hated Ebony.Thatwas supposed to be easy.

“It’s what everyone wants,” I snapped, knowing how unhinged I sounded right now.“We have what everyone wants.”

“And?”

Fuck.

Finally, I closed my fingers around the knife that had been lodged in my throat since the moment I’d made her cry the other day.“And none of it means anything if she hates me!”

The silence was smothering and completely terrifying. Finally, Ebony broke it. “So… How do you fix it?”

“I don’t fucking know!”I didn’t know how to stop hurting her. I couldn’t even conceive of the pain I’d put her through. “She’s… she’s real, and I’m this… this empty shell with nothing to offer anyone! Every time I try to fix it, I make it worse. It doesn’t matter what I do.”

“That’s because you’re a loser.”

“Could you—”

“No. You are. You always have been. You’ve fallen face first into everything good in your life.”

“No! I worked hard—”

“Everyone works hard.” Ebony snorted. “Not everyone has the leg up you had—and if you can’t see that, you’ll never be enough for her.”

“Right. Great. That’s why you’re here? To tell me that I can’t ever be good enough—”

“You have everything you need to be good enough, Rook. You hit every criteria for transformation, but none of that matters if you won’t accept it.”

“I want to!”I couldn't fight this feeling. It justkept. Coming. Back. “You think Iwantto be the kind of person who would hurt her? Who reminds her ofthembecause I’m too fucking blind to deal with my own shit? I just… Every time I try, I hurt her more! I don’t know how!”

“And that makes you… angry?”

“I’m not angry!”
