After, Alejandro came over and gently put a hand on my shoulder. “You do not have to do this if you do not want to. I know it may complicate things a bit, but I am not ready to move on just yet.”

It was so hard not to just close my eyes and lean into his touch. “No,” I said. “It’s fine. It’ll be fun even. I just don’t know when I will have time to go find a dress.”

“Let me take care of that.” He dropped his voice even further. “I have a pretty good idea of your measurements after all.”

I shuddered quietly against his hand and closed my eyes, just for a moment. “Yeah,” I breathed. “That should be fine.”

THE DRESS ARRIVED THEnext day. I was finally home from work and indulging in one of my favorite decompression pastimes – eating sushi in my pajamas while binge watching Skins. Liv had just met up with Matty when the doorbell buzzed. I paused the television and went to open it, forgetting that I looked like a crazed shut in, and was met by a very posh delivery man, who presented me with a designer garment bag. I cast about for a tip, but he refused. “It’s been taken care of, madam.”

“Oh, ok,” I blushed, flustered by the whole situation. I thanked him and closed the door, pulling the pinned card off of the bag as I walked in the direction of my bedroom.A beautiful dress for a beautiful woman. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Yours, Alejandro.

I felt myself grow hot as I laid the garment bag on my bed, undoing the zipper to find a supremely gorgeous dress, black and beaded with a subtle hint of silver. I shrugged out of my pajamas and pulled it on. Of course it was a perfect fit. The fabric was soft despite the beading, and hugged my curves in a way that made me look like a marble statue of a goddess. The low back and high neckline were just the right amount of sexy and conservative for a work event, and threads of silver shimmered as I moved. In the bottom of the bag was a pair of simple black heels and a jewelry box. I opened the box to reveal a silver hair comb with another note.A little something extra from your extra something. – J

My hands shook and I felt tears pricking the backs of my eyes. I really was going to have to face the fact I was falling in love with these two men. Two men who would forever be put at odds by our industry and who the world would never accept in a romantic relationship with the same woman.

But that was a problem for future Kat. Tonight I would hang the dress over my door and relive some of our happier memories before bed.

Chapter Twenty

Iarrived at the banquetto even more media fanfare than normal.Oh, right. The tv crew. I had momentarily forgotten that Smith Racing was playing host to the docuseries crew this week because I was not important enough to need to be mic’d. Luckily that also meant that I was not important enough to cause a stir on the red carpet. As I exited the car there was a momentary flurry among the press until they realized who I was and went back to waiting for more exciting arrivals. I was relieved and hoped to make a quiet entry into the building, but Alejandro clearly had other plans.

As I started up the short walk to the doorway he suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs. He was dressed in a gorgeous tux that hugged his body in ways that should be illegal. He looked like he should be standing there brooding darkly, but instead he had a boyish grin on his face and lifted a hand in a wave calling “Kat!”

I couldn’t help but smile, even as the cameras swung back around to capture this new development. I quickened my pace as he started to walk down towards me, putting our meeting halfway up the stairs. “You look gorgeous tonight,mi cielo,” he said, lifting my hand to his lips for a soft kiss.

A shiver slid its way down my spine even as the heat deep within me surged. Damn these public events. I wanted to be back in a foreign hotel ripping his clothes off. Instead, I stepped back and let him spin me around to get the full effect of the dress. “Well I should hope so, you picked my outfit after all,” I quipped back.

“Ah, that’s right. And I do have exquisite taste, yes?” he replied with a laugh. “Let us get inside. I still have to be mic’d up for the event by our streaming service friends.”

He tucked my hand into his elbow as we walked up and inside the building. A beautiful ballroom opened up before us where everyone was mingling before dinner. I spotted Jason and his sister Sarah off to one side and tugged Alejandro in that direction. “Come on,” I said. “I’ll hang out with Sarah while you two go act important.” He laughed and followed me.

Sarah spotted us first and waved us over. “Hi you two! I’m so glad to see you. Save me from the boring conversationalist that is my brother.” she said with a laugh.

Jason lifted a hand to his chest and let out a gasp. “Excuse me? Boring? Well I never.”
