“I meant to say, yes, Sir.”
“Better. Next time, you’re getting a spanking. Are we clear?”
“W-what?” I cleared my throat to try again, because that voice had come out way too high. “No, please, I-I won’t lie again.”
“Just remember what I said.”
“I will.”
There was a long silence and then he said, very softly, “Would you like me to stay on the phone with you until you go to sleep?” I laughed, but it must have come out a little hysterical, because he shushed me. “Close your eyes and be quiet now. I’ll just sit here with you until you fall asleep.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Shhh. Close your eyes. If you go to sleep as quickly as you did in my bed last night, it will take less than a minute.”
“Oh, very funny.” I snuggled down into the pillow and closed my eyes like he’d told me to. It was still really cold outside, and I lay there for a few seconds, snuggled up to the teddy and listened to the wind whistling around the upper floor where my room was.
“Take slow, deep breaths, and concentrate on each one,” Jared said softly in my ear. “Go on; breathe for me. Concentrate, now. Nice and slow.”
So I concentrated on my breathing, thinking only of that, and I never really knew when I slipped into a deep, coma-like sleep.

I was awakened the next morning by a loud knocking on the door. I stumbled to my feet and went over to peer out the peep hole in the door. I didn’t recognize the young guy at the door at all. He was short and slender, and he had amazing dark hair and eyes and great bone structure in his handsome face. He must have known I was peeking out at him, because he stared right back at the peephole.
I pulled the door open a crack, leaving the chain on.
“Hi,” he said, “Sorry to bother you, but my name is Cruz Martinez. Mr. Spencer sent me.”
“Jared sent you? Hold on a minute.”
I pulled the chain back and opened the door, and he smiled again. “Hi. Mr. Spencer thought you might enjoy going to breakfast with me. They have pancakes downstairs at the restaurant with whipped cream and strawberries. Waffles, too, and bacon.”
“You had me at waffles. Why don’t you go down and get us a table and let me grab a quick shower? I can meet you there if you don’t mind. Just give me a few minutes.”
“Sounds great,” he said, giving me a sweet smile.
It took me more like twenty minutes, but at least I felt a little more awake when I went down to talk to the cute Cruz guy. He was in the restaurant, as promised, sitting by the window and sipping on some coffee. He waved when he saw me at the door, and I went over to take a seat across from him.
“Thanks for coming to breakfast with me. Mr. Spencer said you were here alone and might enjoy meeting someone who’s also going to the Christmas party tomorrow. Why don’t we order and then I can tell you a little more about it?”
A waitress came to take our order—the waffles and a side of bacon for me—and I settled back to listen. “Mr. Spencer said your name was chosen to receive a gift from one of our members? Do you mind my asking which member?”
“I honestly have no idea. Jared said whoever it was got back with an old boyfriend though, so it was Jared who delivered the gift.”
Cruz looked surprised and even worried. “Oh gosh, Connor, that must have been upsetting for you.”
“Well, no, actually. I never met the guy and didn’t know him at all, so no skin off my nose. Besides, Jared is not exactly hard on the eyes.”
“Yes, but the idea was that the member who chose your name would act as your…your escort, in a way, at the party. He’d be the one introducing you and helping you with any questions you might have. Not that everyone there wouldn’t be glad to meet you and help you with any concerns. I hope you know that.”
“Sure, I get it. And I’m not upset.” I leaned in toward him. “And like I said, I think I hit the jackpot with Jared.”
“That’s the thing, Connor. Jared might drop by the party for a short time, but Jared is not a Daddy Dom, so he probably wouldn’t stay long.”
“He isn’t?”
“No, not at all. He’s a completely different kind of Dom.”
