“We had plans for you. We just weren’t ready for them to be carried out yet. But we did see potential in you. We actually envisioned you as a future leader, given your social prowess.”

“Well, I guess you all misjudged me,” I said, shrugging.

“Yes, clearly.” She paused to clear her throat. “And what about Piper? How did you manage to corrupt her and convince her to join your side?”

My lips curved into a wicked smile. “How do you think I did it?” I said in a sly tone.

Zara whipped her head around to look at me again. “What do you mean?” she said, voice rising an octave. “What are you implying?”

“You know exactly what I’m implying.”

“You’re lying.” Her nostrils flared. “Piper wouldn’t touch you. She isn’t a common little slut like Amerie or any of those other girls.”

“Clearly, she would touch me. Why do you think we had that fight at school the other day? She was totally jealous,” I said. “She thought she was the only one I was sleeping with after you guys took Amerie, but then she caught me talking to other girls.”

“You disgusting prick,” she hissed. “I know you’re lying.”

“I’m not,” I said breezily, lacing my fingers behind my head again. “It’s actually all your fault it happened, if you think about it. Putting both girls in bedrooms right across from my window… it’s like you were practically asking for me to climb through and visit them at night.”

Zara’s face had turned purple with rage. I loved how much this bullshit was rattling her.

“You want to know what finally made her flip against the society in the end?” I said, mocking smile widening into a grin.

“What?” Zara spat out.

“She’s pregnant too. Guess those swimmers of mine must be pretty strong, right?” I said. “She was scared you’d treat her the same way you’ve treated Amerie once you found out, so she came over to our side.”

“Shut your dirty little mouth!” Zara shrieked, waving the gun at me again. “How dare you?”

Ali reached over to her with one hand. “Calm down, honey,” he said in a low voice. “He’s just trying to mess with your head. He probably thinks you’ll get angry enough to give him a quick death with that gun.”

“Are you sure about that?” I said, still grinning. “I mean, Piper did flip sides. Something made her do that.”

Zara looked back at me, chest heaving. “You’re a sick little bastard,” she said in a low voice. “I’m going to have a lot of fun torturing you.”

“I’m sure you will,” I replied. “But I’m also sure you’ll spend the rest of your life in prison thinking about me defiling your only daughter. That’ll make it all worth it for me.”

“That’s enough, Jensen,” Ali barked, slamming his hands on the steering wheel.

I smirked and returned my gaze to the window beside me, watching the scenery change from rolling farmland to flatter blocks featuring large houses and yards. Up ahead, the ocean was slowly coming into view on the horizon.

With that, an idea finally popped into my head.

I coughed to clear my throat. “So… this offer you mentioned before,” I said. “Can I ask a few questions about it?”

Zara looked back at me with a sneer. “Getting worried now, are you?”

“No. I just want to clarify some things,” I replied. “You want to know where the girls are, but you haven’t told me why. I assume you want to kill them as revenge for helping me take down the society, but I don’t know that for sure. Am I right?”

“Of course not. We wouldn’t hurt our own daughter,” Zara said with a disdainful sniff.

Sure.

“So that’s Piper safe,” I said evenly. “But what about Amerie? She isn’t your daughter.”

“First of all, she’s pregnant, and we’d never harm a pregnant girl,” she said.

“Why?” I raised a brow. “It’s not like you can sell the baby anymore. That’s all done.”
