Page 13 of Needing Her

But how long had I been hooking up with Bryce without so much as a flicker of suspicion from my brothers? And after only one day of pranking Connor, all hell was breaking loose?

“Maci—”

“Daddy,” I yelled and let a slow, coy smile spread across my face when all four brothers froze. “That’s right, bitches, I just used the ‘daddy’ card.”

They all straightened from what they’d been doing and folded their arms over their chests, waiting for what would come next. Within seconds, loud thuds could be heard coming down the hall. The sound seemed to fuel my brothers’ irritation as four pairs of gray eyes narrowed on me—plotting another intervention or my “boyfriend’s” death.

“Boys, what in the hell is going on in here?” Dad’s deep voice boomed when he entered my office, and I couldn’t help but smile when all four of them subtly flinched.

“Maci has a boyfriend,” Craig answered for them.

Dad raised a graying eyebrow, but before he could respond, I pointed at Craig and said, “That’s a damn dirty lie. They’re harassing me because they think I have a boyfriend.”

“But you don’t?” my dad asked hesitantly, trying to read the room.

“Nope.”

He studied me for another second before turning to go back the way he’d just come. “If she says she doesn’t have one, then she doesn’t. My office, boys.”

My brothers waited, their glares deepening, until Dad’s footsteps could no longer be heard. Then, one by one, they turned to follow. When only Dylan was left, he grabbed a box of paper clips off my desk, opened it up, and threw the contents at me.

“Are you serious?” I asked on a sigh.

“I’m gonna figure out who it is, brat,” he called over his shoulder as he retreated down the hall.

I shook my shirt and listened as more paper clips hit the floor. “Real mature.”

Looking at the mess on the floor, I sighed and lazily fell out of my chair to begin picking them all up. Crawling on my hands and knees to grab the dozens that had scattered under the desk, I’d just begun leaning back when a soft laugh sounded, freezing me in place.

“Do I wanna know why you’re down there?”

I jolted up and back at that voice, wholly misjudging the distance and smacking my head on the corner of the desk in my rush.

“Ow—shit.”

My hands flew up to cradle my head, causing me to drop all the paper clips I’d just spent minutes picking up. But when I rocked back to sit on my heels, I pitched too far and kept going. Falling into my chair, causing it to abruptly roll to the side, and once again hitting my head on the wall as I rolled back.

“Son of a bitch, that fucking hurt,” I hissed through clenched teeth once I was fully, safely, on the ground. “You don’t scare someone who’s under a desk, you motherfucker.”

“I’ve always loved that mouth of yours.”

What?

At the admission, my eyelids shot open to find bright blue eyes directly above me. And I’d officially stopped breathing because Connor Green said he loved my mouth.

Connor’s expression fell as he backed up to sit next to me. “Jesus, did you hit your head that hard? I meant the way you can’t finish a sentence without swearing.”

The anger, humiliation, and insecurities from last night came flooding back as I glared up at the ceiling. All because a scoffing question drove home the reminder that there was nothing about me that Connor Green found appealing. Well, except for the fact that I have lady bits.

“You okay?”

“Fine,” I bit out. “Why are you here?”

He exhaled heavily through his nose and drummed his fingers on the floor. “I came to check on you.”

“Well, I’d say you did a hell of a job with the checkup,” I drawled sarcastically.

“Not my fault you’re prone to hurt yourself on every surface available and enjoy being on your back,” he tossed back in the same tone.
