Page 22 of Needing Her

“Then let’s do it,” Amber yelled as she popped up from my couch, jolting me from my thoughts. “Let’s forget the bastard.”

“Should I be worried?” I asked when Amber held out a hand for me, but I still let her pull me up and push me toward my room.

“Hell no. You want to forget about that dick, and that’s what we’re gonna do. So, slut it up, get yourself looking hot, and let’s go shout from the rooftop that your vagina is finally free.”

Despite everything, a laugh spilled free. “You’re disgusting, you know that?”

“You love my kind of disgusting though,” she said with an unconcerned wave. “Hurry. I want to run home and change too.”

Turning just before I got to the hall, I pointed at her. “I just want to go have fun; I don’t want to find another guy.”

“Uh-huh. Sure.” She shrugged in a way that let me know she had no intention of following that plan. “Let’s get a few shots in you and see if you still feel the same.”

Note to self: Buy a chastity belt and wear it whenever going out with Amber.

CONNOR

I shook my head and drained my beer, watching as Dakota leaned over far enough to—do that. I nearly choked on the last of the liquid but managed to swallow it when he fell off his barstool in a pathetic attempt at watching a couple girls walk away. Looking longingly at them as if he’d give anything to be able to talk to them. As if he hadn’t already gotten one of their numbers. As if he and Dylan weren’t the kinds of guys to hit on almost every woman they saw.

A hushed laugh scraped up my throat as I signaled the waitress for another beer, then held out a hand to Dakota. “Keys. You’re not...driving...” Shit.

My gaze caught on long, vibrant red hair, messy in a way only a girl like Maci could pull off, and my pulse went wild.

“Not drunk, man,” Dakota said, his words barely filtering through my thoughts as I shamelessly stared at his sister. “Just couldn’t stop looking. Did you see her ass?”

“Yeah, saw it,” I muttered automatically. And I was still staring.

Maybe I shouldn’t be driving tonight. Because, other than having a death wish, a guy would have to be wasted to continue checking out his friend’s little sister right in front of him.

“Maci!” Dylan called out when he caught sight of her from where he was working on a table of girls I was positive had used fake IDs to get in here, and Maci stilled.

Pretty damn sure my heart did too.

Turning after Dakota had called out to her as well, her eyes flared when she caught sight of me. But just when it looked like she was about to back away, Dylan wrapped an arm around her shoulder and began leading her and that girl who was always at Maci’s apartment toward our table.

But those eyes...goddamn, those gray eyes slayed me with each step closer. Reiterating that I’d done something to ruin something we’d never even had.

“I said where the fuck is he?” Dylan demanded when they neared the table. “Which one, Mini?”

Maci finally released me from her hardened stare as she tried shrugging Dylan’s arm off her shoulders. When he didn’t give, she started pushing at his side. “I’ve already told you—”

“Is her boyfriend here?” Dakota asked as he slid off the barstool, eyes scanning where she’d just been.

“There’s no boyfriend,” Maci snapped. “For fuck’s sake, can’t you leave me alone for one day?”

“Hi, which one are you?” Maci’s friend asked Dylan as she pressed against his other side.

“Amber, no, gross.” Maci gently smacked at Amber before forcing her way between the two of them. Once she’d gotten her friend away from Dylan, she took a step back the way they’d just come and said, “We’re leaving. You boys have fun getting wasted and hitting on girls too young for you. I’ve told you a dozen times there’s no boyfriend, and there isn’t.” Maci’s glare locked on me again as all emotion slid from her face. “There’s no man in my life because, not only do you all make it impossible, but every guy I’ve come across has proved to be nothing but an asshole.”

There was no way to take that as anything other than a direct attack. But other than the pranks, I had no idea what I’d done.

“Maci, should you be driving?” I asked when she turned to go. “Let me get an Uber.” Not that she looked intoxicated, but she was clearly pissed...at me. Something I had every intention of getting to the bottom of.

And if I was being honest, I wasn’t ready for her to leave yet.

But the moment she looked at me again, eyes wider than I’d ever seen, I realized exactly what I’d done.

“And since when do you give a shit about me, Connor Green?” she asked, the softness of her voice unable to hide the coldness there.
