Like I hadn’t slept in 72 hours. When will you be home?

I glanced at the clock and frowned when I saw the time.

Me

About an hour and a half.

Connor G

Think you can leave early? I need to see you.

Heat flooded my veins in an instant as I studied those simple words that implied so much.

Me

I’ll see what I can do.

Not waiting for his response, I deleted the conversation as I stood and had just put my phone in my pocket when Dylan and Dakota walked into my office.

“Why are you smiling?” Dylan asked, slowing as he scrutinized me.

“Can’t I smile? I smile all the time.”

“Considering you looked bored as shit about five minutes ago and now look like you’re about to go to a Justin Bieber concert...no,” Dakota answered for him.

“Bieber? Seriously? Do you not know me at all? Shit.” I barely managed to catch the mouse Dakota threw at me before it hit me in the face, and fought the urge to launch it right back at him.

“There’s that back,” he said helpfully as if he hadn’t purposefully tried to hit me with it.

“Then Barney—whatever, I’m not judging your taste in music,” Dylan went on. “I’m just saying you look like a freak because you’re suddenly so happy.” Dylan’s expression fell before suspicion took over everything else. “Oh, hell no. Who is he?”

Well, shit.

“For fucking real, when will all of you get off this whole boyfriend thing?” I asked irritably. “There’s no one, and it’s really getting old. I was just going to ask Dad if I could leave early because I made plans with Amber.”

“You can’t,” they said at the same time.

“It’s barely over an hour, and it’s Friday,” I shot back defensively.

“No,” Dylan maintained as Dakota gave him a competitive grin and said, “Amber can wait.”

“You can leave,” Craig said as he walked down the hall, smacking both twins’ heads as he entered my office. “We’re all leaving early; that’s what they were supposed to tell you.”

I gave the twins an annoyed look but focused on Dakota. “Whatever that stupid grin was for, forget it. Stay away from my friends.”

He lifted his hands in surrender, but Dylan was the one who said, “Who said we were the ones who had to stay away? She’s coming on to us.”

I turned my glare on Dylan and pointed at him. “You stay away too.”

“Stay away from who?” Sam asked as he walked down the hall with Dad.

“My friend, Amber,” I said distractedly as I turned and grabbed my purse out of my lowest desk drawer. Once I had all my things and my computer off, I faced the five of them. “Goodbye, I hate all of you. Except you, Dad, I love you.” Kissing his cheek, I didn’t give my brothers the chance to respond as I practically sprinted out of the office and to my car.

I hardly remember the drive, only that I somehow made it back to my apartment complex. My heart racing the closer I got to the building...to him.

Not bothering with my apartment, I let myself into Connor’s and knew immediately in the silence and stillness of the apartment that he wasn’t there. Still, I walked around, my steps becoming slower and more hesitant the deeper I went without finding him.
