Page 45 of Needing Her

“I finished everything almost as soon as Craig gave me the information,” I answered dully. “The security officers have been informed of the new places.”

“See? Favorite sister.”

“Why are you really in here?” I challenged with a lift of my eyebrow.

He leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of the desk as his expression shifted into something more mischievous. “I want Amber’s number.”

“Um, no. Definitely not. Even if she didn’t have a boyfriend, I already told you and Dylan my friends are off-limits—especially Amber.”

“I just want her number. Never said I was going to try anything with her.”

An incredulous laugh pushed from my lungs. “You honestly think I’m going to believe that?”

“Hell no,” he said as he slid off the desk, taking my Kindle with him. “Can’t blame me for trying.”

“Put the Kindle down,” I said slowly, enunciating each word. When he didn’t stop, I called out, “Don’t make me use the ‘daddy’ card.”

Dakota froze, his head falling as a heaving exhale left him. After a few seconds, he turned and tossed the Kindle onto my desk, muttering, “Bitch,” under his breath as he did.

“Aww.” I placed a hand on my chest and made a face as if he’d just given me the greatest compliment. “And here I thought I was your favorite.”

“Doesn’t change the fact that you’re a bitch.”

“I learned from you,” I shot back in a singsong voice.

He huffed as he started for the hall again. “Tell Amber I’m looking forward to spending time with her in Mammoth.”

“I’ll be sure to tell her you have syphilis.”

Dakota shot me a disturbed look over his shoulder. “That’s cruel.”

“It’s up to you.” I shrugged because it didn’t matter to me either way. “Try something with my friends, and I’ll make up a massive list of STDs that you miraculously contracted overnight.”

“You don’t play nice.”

“Neither do you,” I reminded him as I inspected my Kindle to make sure he hadn’t damaged it.

Sam came up behind him and shoulder-checked Dakota into the wall, pinning him there. “We’re closing up, Mace. You can go home if you’re done with everything.”

I was already grabbing my purse and stuffing all my things in it before he finished speaking. I yelled, “I love you,” to our dad so I wouldn’t have to pass my brothers, then offered them a dry, “See you Monday,” as I hurried for the door.

Not that I had anything to look forward to at home, but sitting in my apartment was better than sitting in my office, waiting to be irritated by my brothers. But once I made it home, my eyes strayed to my phone more than they stayed on the screen of my Kindle, so I finally gave up on reading and decided on something else to pass the time...

I cleaned.

I was that desperate for time to pass.

But it wasn’t until after I’d thoroughly deep-cleaned my apartment and was rearranging Christmas decorations that my phone chimed. “Fucking finally,” I breathed as I hurried across my living room to get it off the counter.

I’m about to leave. I want you in my bed and waiting for me when I get home.

I nearly dropped my phone in my excitement as I rushed to the bathroom so I could shower. All the while, my heart raced, and those incessant wings fluttered in my stomach as those shields melted away to nothing.
