Daharak moved away to prepare her captain. Before Prisca could pause time, Daharak’s ships needed a clear route past Regner’s blockade.

Prisca squinted at the water. “Can you see it?”

I shrugged. “No. But I haven’t spent my life in these waters.”

Daharak sent one last signal back to the ships, and her cannons fired as one. From both sides.

Daharak slammed her weapons into Regner’s left flank, just as her ships closest to the inlet did the same. Regner’s armada was forced to engage ships from both the north and south at once as Daharak’s pirates capitalized on the chaos.

Cannons fired in deafening volleys, setting my teeth on edge. Prisca peered up at me. “Do your sensitive fae ears hurt?”

She said sensitive fae as if she really meant tiny baby. I pinched her hip, and she smirked.

“If you need a distraction from the violence, I have a few suggestions, wildcat.”

Her smirk widened, but she turned back to the carnage. I surveyed the others. Galon stood a few footspans away, his arms crossed.

Strolling over to him, I kept my voice low. “You’re not using your power?”

His face clouded over. “I promised Prisca I wouldn’t coerce the waves.”

Irritation warred with tenderness. Tenderness won. I knew Prisca took the seer’s warning seriously. Truthfully, the thought of leaving her alone… It burned a hole in the center of my chest. Wherever I went after this life, I would miss her with everything in me.

Galon glared at me. “Were you going to tell us?”

“About the so-called prophecy?”

“Don’t make light of it. We just lost Cavis.”

My gut twisted. “I know.” I sighed. “I refuse to consider the idea that everything we’ve been through was meaningless. That I’ll ultimately leave Prisca here alone. Because if I let myself dwell on it, I might begin to believe it. And the thought of what my death would do to her…”

Some of the fury drained from his face. “I refuse to believe it either.” He turned his gaze to Prisca, who had tightened her hands on the railing, her eyes sharp as she stared into the distance.

“No matter what happens, she’ll never be alone, Lorian.”

My throat tightened and I nodded.

“You’re up, Hybrid King,” Daharak said, stalking down the deck toward me. I turned, my gaze finding Madinia’s. She fixed me with a dismissive look.

I preferred when Madinia was afraid of me. Unfortunately, she knew I was far too in love with Prisca to harm any of the people my mate considered hers.

Daharak had created a small gap between Regner’s ships on the left flank. Now I would open it up.

Reaching down into the depths of my power, I opened the door I usually kept locked, barred, and hidden.

Lightning jumped from me, cracking through the sky and into the ship Daharak pointed out.

Regner’s captains likely hadn’t expected power like mine. If Daharak had attacked without us, the humans would have only needed to defend against cannon fire and fae-iron-tipped arrows.

Which meant there was no ward to dampen my blow. I sliced into the first hull, and the ship immediately listed, taking on water. I struck the ships again and again. The larger the gap, the faster Daharak’s ships could escape, and the easier it would be for Prisca.

And so, I drowned and burned and destroyed. Tears rolled down Prisca’s cheeks at the destruction. Despite the fact that these were our enemies. They were still humans, and she wept for them. Something in my chest wrenched at the misery on her face.

Crew members fell into the sea, weighed down by heavy armor. Masts cracked, sails fell limp, and water poured into gaping holes.

I paused.

“What are you doing?” Daharak demanded.
