“We’re dealing with another fucking scandal,” he roars on the other end. “Derek strikes yet again.”
“Are you serious?”
“The news broke an hour ago, and everyone here has been running around like headless chickens.”
“Did another lover come forth?” He thought that would be a possibility, but I was praying it wouldn’t happen.
“Yes!” He speaks that one word with such anger.
“Err… sorry.”
He growls. He actually growls. “I didn’t mean to lose my temper, Sofia. None of this is your fault. It’s coming at me at vertiginous speed. We don’t have time to react.”
“How bad is it?”
“It’s a mammoth of a scandal. When this goes viral––and it will––it could jeopardize everything I’ve built.” More growling. “For Christ’s sake, the idiot wasn’t only fucking men at the same time as he was married to his wife, but he had a thing for underage boys.”
“Jesus!”
“It’s a shit storm of meteoric proportion. “In this chapter of Derek Chamberlain’s sordid story, a young man by the name of Harry Wheeler claims he’s been having a flaming affair with Derek since he was sixteen and he’s now just turned eighteen!”
“Sex with a teenage boy?!”
“I’m so fucking frustrated by Derek. If he wasn’t already dead, I would’ve killed the bastard with my own two hands by choking him to death. God beat me to it.”
“Derek had a lot to lose by going after underage boys.”
“I hung up with him not long ago.” No wonder he’s furious.
“He called you?”
“Yes. I hate being in the spotlight like this. I’m now an easy target for all the crazies out there. Harry called our receptionist who transferred him to one of my directors. He refused to speak to him. Sensing this was a ticking bomb that was going to explode in our faces, my director alerted me. I accepted Harry’s call. He claims he has proof—Derek and him in scandalous photos.”
“That’s not good.”
“This is my first foray in the world of the daddy/little boy kink—according to Harry, Derek was into that. Knock yourself out if it’s your thing, but make sure the little boy is fucking eighteen.”
“So, Derek was a…”
“Pedophile,” he finishes my sentence. “It seemed like it, but since I’m a stubborn motherfucker, I have my team digging deeper.”
“You don’t believe Harry?”
“I’m not saying Derek couldn’t have been a pervert, but there’s something about Harry…”
“What about him?”
“It didn’t feel like I was talking to a teenage boy. Everything that came out of his mouth was calculated. He was too slick—”
“I still don’t understand.”
“He’s either spent more time watching too many episodes of Law & Order instead of playing video games, or he’s a puppet, and someone else—an adult—is running the show.”
“Why call you to let you know he’s having an affair with your former CFO. Why not give a tell all interview like Jayden and Derek’s other lover?”
“That’s the million-dollar question. In this case, the multimillion-dollar question.”
