How dare he make me feel guilty when he’s been MIA and radio silent?

Stupid Sofia.

You should’ve abided by Todd’s cardinal rules.

Chapter 23

Three days later, I’m able to appreciate the epic proportion of Bryce’s scandal when Alistair brings the topic up on the flight to Puerto Rico.

“Can you believe what this poor chap, Bryce Van Der Linden, is dealing with?”

My head whips in his direction, the book I’m reading, a second thought, my eyes wide with worry, my heart beating like a drum.

Did I mention Bryce to Alistair?

I tread carefully. “What are you talking about?”

“This guy,” he hands me his iPad, “he’s the CEO of Linden Corp.”

I grab the device from him.

The screaming headlines slap me across the face.

‘LINDEN CORP’S DECEASED CFO: ON THE DOWNLOW WHILE HE WAS MARRIED TO A WOMAN WITH THREE KIDS?!’

‘BRYCE VAN DER LINDEN’S COMPANY MARRED WITH HAIR-RAISING SEX SCANDAL. IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END?’

‘LINDEN CORP’S DECEASED CFO CAUSING LOTS OF DRAMA FROM THE GRAVE.’

“The guy’s business crisis has become water cooler small talk,” Alistair says.

I stiffen.

There’s no worse feeling than when your life becomes fair game for anyone with an asshole to criticize. I know that firsthand.

“There’s probably a lot we don’t know.” My tone is a little more biting than I intended.

He frowns, then shakes his head. “You’re probably right. One thing is certain, the CFO in the story did his family wrong and did Mr. Van Der Linden wrong.”

“He did.”

Alistair eyes me with suspicion.

“What?” I ask.

“You didn’t even read the article. How would you know?”

“I’ve been following the story. Like you said, the guy’s business crisis has become water cooler small talk.”

He nods.

Oof. Dodged that bullet.
