Leaning into me, he kisses his way from my cheek, to my jaw, before hovering over my lips. “I fucking love you, beautiful,” he whispers before taking ownership of my mouth.

I let out a soft whimper as my lips respond to his, our tongues seeking something deeper than before, my hands snaking around his strong shoulders, fingers curling into his thick hair.

I’ve never needed anything more than this kiss in my life.

My heart is so full, it could explode like fireworks.

He breaks the kiss.

He loves me. He really loves—

Reality washes over me.

My face contorts as pain seers through me.

“What is it?” he asks.

“How is this going to work between us?”

He frowns. “What are you talking about?”

“You can’t keep paying for my time with Todd. If you do, it’s like you’re my client—”

“You have to quit.”

My head jerks back. “I can’t give up that kind of money.”

He twists his lips. “You can’t be with other men, Sofia. You own my heart. If someone else touches you, they die.”

I’m caught between a rock and a hard place.

A pang of sadness hits me.

He narrows his eyes. “Who wronged you? What did they take from you?”

I don’t answer.

“Tell me, Sofia. I’ll deal with the asshole. I’m certain there’s a way out.”

“The only way out is for me to win at the Power Ball so I can be free of my shackles—”

“I’ll give you the goddamn money.”

The commodity that’s been at the bane of my existence.

“No,” I shake my head vehemently. “Money has ruined my life. I won’t allow it to come between us.”

Chapter 27

Sofia

Todd arches an eyebrow as he approaches his office building in the Meatpacking District, where I’ve been standing for forty-five minutes, knowing full well he doesn’t show up for work before eleven.

I glance at my phone.

Twenty past eleven.

Great.
