I forgot about that half-lie.

“I’m brain dead.”

She puts on her worried face. “Why do I sense you’re not telling me the full story.”

Best to turn the spotlight on her. “Holy shit, you’re tanned!”

“Tell me about it. It’s a thousand degrees in the shade here.”

I force a laugh.

She twists her lips. “That little maneuver didn’t go unnoticed. No soy una tonta.”

Translation: I’m not a fool.

“Stop worrying about me. I’m fine.”

“I’m not convinced.”

“Do you want me to do the happy dance to prove it?”

She pinches her lips in a flat line. “The only reason I’m willing to let it go is because there’s something else on my mind.”

I dodged that bullet.

“What’s up?”

“It’s about Mom and Dad.”

My eyes widened. “Did something happen to them?”

“No,” she shakes her head. “You know how Dad is heading to the German division of his company after the conference he’s attending in Cancún?”

It’s because you guys are out of town that I can keep my secret… a very big secret. “Yes.”

“I asked him to bring back the stack of British decor magazines Mom bought for me since she’s been in London. He’s returning to New York the day before I’m back from Bali. I could’ve waited for Mom to come back, but she’ll be in London for another week.”

“Okay.”

Ciara cocks a brow. “Dad isn’t going to London.”

“Will Mom go visit him in Hamburg?”

“No.”

“Dad will be in training most of the day for his recent promotion, and I’m sure there will be evening dinners and drinks, but they’ll be together at night.”

“That’s what I thought, but Dad says Mom is going from London to Barcelona, with no detours in Hamburg.”

I frown. “They haven’t seen each other in weeks because they’ve both been on business trips. Why wouldn’t they want to spend some time together?”

“Remember Sunday dinner before the three of us had to leave New York?”

“Yes. The vibe was weird between them.”

“Weird? she says. “More like there was an arctic front blowing through their house. I swear, I thought I was going to need a duvet coat.”

I was kind of preoccupied with juggling creditors in my head, maybe I misread the situation. “I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. Couples who’ve been married as long as our parents are bound to fight. Not to mention, we’re Latinos. We express our feelings.”
