Serves me right for having a big mouth.

“If my company wasn’t in the middle of a move from the West Coast to the East Coast, I’d get someone else on the team to stress out over the lights. But even then, why waste time when your girlfriend’s sister is the right person for the job?”

Girlfriend.

He’s never referred to me like that before.

I should be ecstatic, but the idea of Bryce working with Ciara turns my stomach to lead.

“I see.”

“I know she just got back from Bali, and catching up must be a bitch, but I was hoping you might be my liaison.”

“Okay,” I draw out the word.

He loves you.

He tells you.

He demonstrates it.

He hasn’t met Ciara yet that’s why he thinks you’re a great catch.

Once he meets her, he’ll be blinded by her beauty like most men.

“Let’s have lunch or dinner so we can get to know each other,” he says. “Then, I’ll get my executive assistant to book a formal meeting where Ciara can see the office and present her vision. How fast can you arrange a meeting?”

Next century.

He places a hand over mine. “The subject of your sister troubles you.”

I’m not going to lose Bryce because of my insecurities in regards to Ciara.

I lift a defiant chin before grabbing my phone. “I’m not troubled.” Lies. All lies. “Let me call her.”

My heart pounds at the same cadence as the ringing.

“Hey, Sof,” my sister says.

“Hey, sis, you’re going to owe me a big referral fee.”

“Why’s that?”

Please God, don’t let this be a mistake.

Chapter 33

Sofia

I spent most of the night tossing and turning, listening to Bryce’s breathing, unable to sleep, my mind conjuring all sorts of scenarios.

My stomach was so tied up in a knot, I couldn’t eat a bite all day. I lived off coffee in an attempt to forge through the day. The anticipation of tonight’s dreaded family meeting had me on edge.

At five o’clock in the afternoon, I stuffed an egg sandwich down my throat to settle my stomach.

I’m the first one to arrive at seven p.m. at Employees Only—one of New York’s best cocktail bars.

Bryce is coming from a meeting. I’m grateful I didn’t have to ride with him.
