Bryce

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Still no answer.

Did she and her family go out to a restaurant?

I ring the doorbell again.

The door flies open.

“Ciara.”

“Bryce.” Her eyes sweep up and down the length of my body, her lips curling into a sneer. “Or should I call you, my sister’s John.”

Her words are like a slap in the face.

I gather things aren’t going so great for my girl.

“The name is Bryce. Bryce Van Der Linden.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Bryce Van Der Linden, but now is not a great time.” My name on her lips is like a swear word.

I cock a brow.

She’s holding the door, her stretched arm acting as a barrier, the expression on her face, stoic.

“I know you’re in the middle of a family dinner—”

“We’re in the middle of a family crisis. It seems my sister has been keeping secrets from us. Big. Fat. Secrets. I’m guessing you’re one of the few people on the planet who’s in the know.”

I exhale. “May I come in?”

“No.”

What the fuck? “I need to speak to your sister.”

“What part of we’re in the middle of a family crisis didn’t you understand?”

My lips thin. “English is the only language I master, so I got the message loud and clear. That doesn’t change my position. I need to speak to Sofia.”

“Not happening.”

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way, Ciara.”

She narrows her light brown eyes at me. “You’re in no position to negotiate. I don’t have to let you in to the house.”

With my lips pursed in frustration, I nod. “The hard way it is.”

I hoist Ciara over my shoulder.

“Hey! What are you doing? Let me down!”

“I’m a take no prisoners kind a guy.” I close the door with my foot before charging into the house. “You had your choice.”

She bangs her fist against my back.

“Stop wiggling!”
