“Yeah, well, sometimes reality is stranger than fiction!” Sofia shoots back.
Mr. Herrera growls at me. “A big man with big money. We’re all fighting because of you.” He points an angry finger in my direction. “You have some nerve showing your face here after you paid to have sex with my daughter. You disgusting piece of—”
A crashing noise has us all jumping.
My eyes drop to the floor.
A glass vase—or bowl—is shattered into a thousand pieces.
“¡Callarse!” Mrs. Herrera shouts. “¡Basta! ¡Dejen de pelear y gritar!”
I didn’t understand a word, but her irate expression is enough to stop the war of words.

Sofia
If Mom wanted to catch our attention, crashing that cheap and cheerful thrift store bowl was the way to do it.
My heart is thundering out of my chest.
Tension laces the air.
I’m this close from throttling my sister. And I just want my father to stop talking.
I expected this dinner to be animated, I didn’t expect a reenactment of Avengers: Infinity War’s battle scene.
“All of us standing here yelling at each other isn’t going to accomplish much,” Mom says. “Emilio, you asked Sofia a question, but we didn’t give her a chance to explain—”
“She told us she’s a prostitute. What more explanation do you need, woman?”

“You’re not part of this conversation!” Dad snaps, pointing a finger at Bryce. “I told you to leave this house—”

That simmers Dad down.
