I expel a breath.

Since Bryce didn’t have dinner, Mom prepared him a plate. As he enjoys the Colombian food and wine, I spill my guts.

I unravel the tangled web of the past several months. I tell my family about the couple with the special needs daughters who I gave every last dime to my name to—even selling anything of value to beef up the fund. I set my pride aside, and share my financial woes. I’m an open book about my escort gig—without revealing Alistair’s name. Well, almost open. I hold back on the kinky couple. Of course, I don’t tell them about Ruby. I wrap up my tale by explaining how I could no longer work for Todd. I couldn’t be in love with one man and let others touch me.

Half the time, Dad looked like he was going to be sick. Mom, to her credit, kept a neutral expression. Ciara’s mouth puckered like she was sucking on a lemon the whole time.

“In a twist of fate,” I conclude, “I was only with one man…”

“Just one?” My father asks.

“Yes.”

“I made sure to book her even when I was in Silicon Valley, so her handler wouldn’t match her with another client,” Bryce says. “I would’ve burned this city to ashes had it happened.”

Dad’s eyes lift to the ceiling, and he mutters, “Gracias a Dios.”

Mom does a sign of the cross. Twice.

“Is that why you became a blonde?” my sister asks.

“I never understood why you would cut your long, dark, beautiful hair,” Dad says.

Mom chimes in. “And you cut it so short.”

I run my fingers through my hair. “It’s not that short, Mom.”

Her expression suggests she disagrees.

Julia Herrera and her obsession with hair.

Nothing in this world would convince her to cut her long, wavy hair she wears tied back most of the time. Not even ten million dollars.

“To your credit, you look good as a blonde,” Ciara says. “I could never pull it off.”

I’m sure she would.

“The escort gig is one reason for the transformation,” I say. “The other was the articles online.”

Ciara’s stone face softens. “It all makes sense now.”

I heave a sigh of relief.

She turns her attention to Bryce. “Being a billionaire comes in handy.”

“It does,” Bryce says. “When I want something, it’s as good as done.” He grabs my hand into his. “And in this case, Sofia was mine from the first day we met.”

My cheeks burst into flames.

More Gracias a Dios.

More signs of the cross.

Ciara’s raised eyebrow suggests she’s impressed. “Look at you, knight in shining armor.”

Bryce shrugs.

She winks at him. “I knew there was a reason I liked you when I first met you.”
