“I should be the one complimenting you,” he says. “You look stunning.”

“You’re going to make me blush,” I say.

“You’re a new woman with this hairstyle,” Timothy says.

“He’s right, Sof,” Claire agrees. “You look amazing. Turquoise is your color and it’s so perfect with your new shorter haircut. I can’t believe you cut all your hair off and you’re now a blonde like me. I’d never have the courage. Good on you for being so daring.”

My hair is naturally quite dark—given the fact my ancestors are from the Caribbean and South America—and it’s been down to my waist for as long as I can remember, but a new career as an escort demanded a complete transformation.

Claire, on the other hand, would rather die than cut off an inch of her blonde mane. She’s always used her hair like a weapon of seduction because she knows how her golden locks drive men crazy. She’s not the prettiest, but she knows how to use what she has to her advantage.

“You look beautiful, as always, Claire. I love your necklace.”

“Oh, Sof, thank you. Timothy gave it to me for our fourth anniversary,” she says, as she casually plays with her diamond necklace.

“Has it been four years already?” I ask, pretending to be surprised.

“It has, and we have great news,” she says, unable to contain her excitement.

“Am I going to be an aunt?”

“Not yet, but Timothy and I are trying.”

“Mazel tov! I’m sure half the fun in getting pregnant is trying,” I say with a wink.

“You’re so bad, but you’re so right,” she says with a sparkle in her eye.

Timothy’s face turns beet red.

Message received.

These two have been fucking like rabbits.

“Let me call a waiter over before we start catching up. Timothy and I have to be out of here in forty-five minutes or we’ll miss our plane back home and you know how much we love staying in New York more than we have to,” she says, curling her lips in disgust.

“I’m sorry, Sofia, I had to push the time, but I was caught in a never-ending meeting,” Timothy says.

“Don’t worry about it,” I say. “It’s good to catch up.”

Claire comes from a wealthy family, but Timothy’s wealth makes her family look poor. Timothy is an actuary in his father’s prestigious accounting firm, and although their biggest clients are in New York, the Winthrop clan insist on staying firmly grounded in Boston.

They’re in town every so often when Timothy’s presence is mandatory at his Wall Street office. They’re never here for more than three days—two of which Timothy spends locked up in meetings while Claire power-shops.

“That shouldn’t be a problem,” I say.

A waiter acknowledges Claire, and rushes over to our table.

We place our drink orders.

“How have you been? Are you recovering?” Claire looks at me with puppy eyes, pouting to accentuate her question.

“I’m doing okay.” Lies!

“Listen, Sof, you don’t have to put on a brave face on our account. We read about your story online. We couldn’t believe how your former business partner screwed you over. You had such a spotless reputation.” Had.

“Claire, maybe Sofia doesn’t want to talk about it.” Timothy comes to my rescue, and I love him for jumping in.

“Thanks, Timothy, for your concern. Claire, it was a nightmare and that’s the best way I can describe it. I’m putting all my energy into rebuilding my life.”
