“Do you think we should’ve invited Todd?” I ask.
“He probably would be all up the second cousin of the Duke of Something-Something’s business to find out if there are any Swedish royals in or out of the closet he might hook up with.” Her gaze shifts to the dance floor where her family has taken up residency. “Where’s the devil now?”
“I haven’t seen Ludvig in a while,” I say. “Since his bodyguards stayed on shore, maybe he let his hair down. Not that I noticed, but there are a lot of gorgeous women on your side of the family.”
She brings a hand to my cheek. “Spoken like a perfect husband.”
“So, you made the right decision by marrying me?”
“Abso-freaking-lutely.”
I wink. “Good answer.”
“I mean every word.”
I nod. “We had to climb mountains to get here.”
“We did,” she agrees. “I was forbidden to see you as more than a client, we were living on opposite coasts, you had to deal with hair-raising corporate drama, and––the cherry on a sundae––that meet the parent dinner kicked off on a disastrous note.”
“Yet, here we are.”
“The most wonderful day of my life.”
“Same.”
She flashes me a warm smile. “This is the happiest I’ve ever been, and I have you to thank for this mind-blowing day.”
“It was all Contessa Mariella’s doing.”
“But she considers you a son, and she did all this,” she opens her arms, “for you.”
“For us.”
“I like being an us.”
I lean into her. “I’m looking forward to later tonight when we’re finally alone in our cabin, so we can really be an us.”
She cocks a perfectly penciled brow. “Everything about your tone suggests you’re harboring unholy thoughts, Mr. Van Der Linden.”
“You better believe it, Mrs. Van Der Linden.”
“Should I be worried?”
“Very.”
“I’m not sure I’ll be able to handle my husband.”
“You’re probably right, but we have a lifetime for you to practice. Let’s just call the next few days Basic Camp.”
“That sounds strenuous.”
“It’s gonna be a hell of a workout.”
“If you detain me for three days in our cabin, Ciara will send for the troops.”
“Speaking of my sister-in-law, where is she?”
