An hour later and I’m sitting in a cloud of bubble wrap. I managed to unpack three steppers and two treadmills. After giving them a good wipe, I moved the equipment to the side so they’re no longer in the middle of the space. Yay me!

“I need a break. And a boost of energy,” I grumble to myself as I admire my work. Famished and desperate to stretch my legs, I dust off my jeans and head to the tiny kitchen to wash my hands. I open the fridge and laugh. Other than the bottles of natural energy drink Alice bought, it’s pretty bare. I grab a bottle, crack it open, and just when I’m about to take a sip, I remember I didn’t charge my phone. Crap. I drop the bottle on the counter and head to the warehouse. It takes forever to find the stupid thing under all the bubble wrap.

“There you are!” I sigh in frustration, holding my phone up in victory.

I’m just about to head to my office to fetch my cord when I stop dead in my tracks.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

A violent sound assaults my ears, causing me to drop my phone. I try to catch it before it hits the cement floor, but it’s in vain.

Fuck!

Tires screech against the asphalt.

Engines gunning angrily.

What the hell is going on outside?

A loud bang follows, suggesting two vehicles colliding into each other.

An accident?

Angry voices echo in the distance.

The shouting match is frightening.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

I was so preoccupied with saving my phone, it’s only now it registers.

Gunshots?!

An explosion of shattering glass follows.

I jump in fright.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod.

My heart is beating at the same infernal rate as my temples.

Just when I think it can’t get worse, it does.

The deafening cracking sound of gunshots pierces through the night and it makes me scream.

Culver City is supposed to be a safe neighborhood.

What the hell?

Fearing I’ve drawn attention to myself, I drop to the floor and clamp both hands over my mouth.

And just like that, my life flashes in front of my eyes and I can only think of the man I love.

Levi.

Shit. I love him?!

What a moment to have an epiphany.
