I can’t believe I’m willing to be this vulnerable and transparent with a man I barely know.

Beckett gets up and rounds his desk until he’s standing next to me.

I almost lose myself in his beautiful blue eyes.

This close, they’re like two fiery aquamarine stones staring back at me. His gaze lingers on me long enough to make me blush. I lower my gaze, chewing my lower lip in the hopes of regaining my bearings as a rush of hot shivers runs through me.

A man has never elicited this type of pull before.

“I’m sorry, Arianne, but dinner is a no go.”

“Oh.”

Good job, Arianne.

“Earlier, you said dinner between us had to be strictly business. After what you shared, I can’t agree to that. You have to decide if you’re okay deviating from that stipulation or if you’ll stick to your guns.”

Confusion causes my eyebrows to knit together.

“I was going to take you to a notable restaurant, but not anymore,” he says. “We need to have a kickass dining experience followed by a wild night out on the town. It’s the best remedy to say a big fuck you to your ex and flip the middle finger to that backstabber.”

His words are wishful thinking.

“It’s not like they’re going to know,” I say.

“True, but you’ll know, and you’ll feel a hell of a lot better. If I do a good job—and push you out of your comfort zone—you’ll forget their very existence.”

From his lips to God’s ears.

“I’m almost afraid to ask what you have in mind.”

“Remember when we were roommates in that elevator?”

“You’ll never let me live that down, will you?”

“No. Never. I’ll milk it for all it’s worth,” he says. “Going back to that day… When the lights turned back on, you told me you had never closed a bar or a dance floor.”

“It’s true.”

“We need to change that. Let’s go out and paint the town red!”

“But it’s only Wednesday.”

“This is LA, baby! The city that never sleeps.”

“Isn’t that New York?” I ask.

“Please. They wish.”

I laugh.

“Are we on?” Beckett asks.

I shake my head and nod at the same time. My thoughts, a jumble.

“Are you turning me down again?”

“I’m not! I came in here to apologize. This turnabout is beyond my expectations.”
