I frown. “Yes, I will.”

“Good, because I’ll miss you like crazy.”

A thought hits me. I pull my lower lip between my teeth.

“What is it?” he asks.

I shake my head. “Nothing.”

He narrows his eyes.

“Nothing,” I repeat.

“I’ll only be gone for a couple of days, but to be sure Todd doesn’t book you with another client, I’ll drop by his office on the way to the airport and leave enough money to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

It’s as if he read my mind.

“I can’t stand the thought of another man touching you or fucking you, Sofia.” He spits out those words.

Chapter 13

Sofia

I arrive at my place exhausted, but elated to be home. Lucky for me, the chauffeur Bryce hired to drive me helped with my suitcases. For tonight, I won’t bother with them. They can remain in the foyer.

I dump my handbag on a chair, and head to the kitchen. As I trail through the house, I make mental notes of what I need to do over the next few days.

Since I gave up most of my clothing and my closet is practically bare, it won’t take long for me to fill it with all the new items Bryce bought me.

I already miss him.

My phone rings.

I run to where I left my bag and fish for it.

Ciara.

Should I let it go to voicemail?

She’ll call again

“Hey, sis!” I inject fake pep in my voice. “How’s Bali treating you?”

“I’m trapped inside a hotel working on impossible deadlines with vendors dropping the ball left, right, and center. Don’t get me started on everything that’s lost in translation. All that to say, I haven’t been able to live out my Eat Pray Love.”

“In other words, you haven’t hooked up with an eligible silver fox who swept you off your feet yet?”

“Nope! And it’s unlikely to happen given my work schedule. To make matters worse, every time I step outside, I end up sweating my tits off.”

“You’re hilarious.”

She soldiers on. “Whoever said the humidity in Miami is unbearable has never been to Bali. Dad was complaining via text about the unsufferable conditions in Cancún, aka the high humidity that causes his glasses to fog every time he steps outside. When I told him how hot and humid it was here, he said he’d stop complaining.” Thank you, God, for making sure my family was out of the country. They can’t witness how low I’ve sunk. “I gave up on trying to do you anything with my hair, other than to tie it up in a braided chignon.”

I scoff. “You and your hair.”

“You say that because your hair is easier to tame than mine and it isn’t as long.”

“You can always cut it like I did.”
