I’m a lucky girl.

I arrive home with arms filled with groceries when my phone rings.

Shit.

I open the door and drop everything to the floor, searching for my phone at the bottom of my handbag. By the time I grab it, I’ve missed the call.

I check my recent calls, but I have none.

Strange.

I could have sworn I heard the phone ring—

Duh!

It’s my escort-gig-only phone ringing.

Must select a ringtone that’s more distinguishable than the one I use on my personal phone.

It rings again.

I race to the living room to pick it up.

I glance at the display.

Bryce!

“Hey, beautiful. Have you been keeping busy?”

“As a matter of fact, I have.” I can barely contain my excitement at the thought of being with him in the next few hours.

“Good. That way, you can’t get into trouble.”

I laugh. “You must be busy.” I sit down on the couch. “I haven’t heard from you all day.”

He lets out a sigh.

I sit straight up on the couch, concerned. “That bad?”

“It’s not a good day. I’ve been dealing with a lot here, Sofia.”

Frowning, I ask, “What happened?” Before he can answer, I tack on another question. “Is it that nasty cyber attacker?”

“No.” He’s quiet for a few long beats. He lets out another sigh. This one long and suffering.

Now, I’m really worried. “What is it?”

“It’s my CFO, Derek Chamberlain. His wife called me in the middle of the night. Derek was rushed to the emergency room.”

“Dear God,” I gasp.

“He had a heart attack.”

“I pray he’ll be okay.”

“Derek passed away this afternoon after a second, more violent heart attack.”

Good God. “I’m so sorry, Bryce.”
