I read Todd’s message.

Todd: As long as he’s paying for your services, he can be obsessed with you all he wants. But if he’s not paying, he needs to cool his jets. From the tone of his message, he’s under a lot of pressure. Still, he can insult me all he wants. Damn right I’m your handler. Thanks to me, you’re making a lot of fucking money.

Fuck texting Todd back. I call him instead.

“Good God. Between you and Bryce texting and calling me, I can’t get any work done,” he says in lieu of a greeting.

Since he bypassed niceties, I do the same. “Todd, I can’t allow Bryce to think I’m having sex with another man. You have to tell him Alistair is—”

“Have you already forgotten the rules?” His tone is icy. “Rule number one…” He rattles them on. “The only reason I copied his text is as a reminder of what happens when a former client toes the line with becoming a borderline stalker. Since eleven this morning, he’s texted and called me a total of twelve times. The man is acting like a jealous boyfriend.” He never professed that much. I expected things to evolved when he moved to New York. Derek Chamberlain’s death has had ripple effects beyond his family. “That’s not only ridiculous, given the rules, but it’s also aggravating. FYI, I’ll ignore his future attempts at badgering me.”

“Todd—”

“Who’s your client, Amanda? Alistair or Bryce?”

I don’t answer. I’m fuming.

“If you can’t figure it out, then perhaps, there’s no point in you dropping by the office when you get back to New York to collect your money.”

Bastard. “My client is Alistair,” I say through gritted teeth.

“Glad to hear we’re on the same page,” he says. “I have to hang up now because I’m heading out to meet a new prospect.”

He doesn’t wait for my answer before ending the call.

“Fuck!”

Chapter 18

Sofia

Two days later, I’m back in New York.

After Alistair and I parted ways at the airport, I arrived at my place a little after one a.m., and crashed from my whirlwind trip.

This morning, I wake up super early. On my way to my place from the airport, I ordered groceries to be delivered first thing. Once my fridge and cupboards are full, I clean my place.

Satisfied with my productive morning, I jump in the shower. I have a few errands to run before heading to Todd’s office to pick up my money before doing the tours to deposit the cash at the different banks.

I’m still pissed off at him, but I’ll have to suck it up and put my big girl panties on. He’s my lifeline, and I don’t want to aggravate the hand that feeds me.

I’m still in my bathroom, towel-drying my hair when the doorbell rings. The unexpected ring startles me.

Did the delivery guy forget to hand me a bag?

I drop the towel on the countertop, exit the bathroom, and run down the stairs.

The bell rings again.

I approach my door and get on my toes to check the peephole.

That’s not the delivery guy.

Holy shit.

I crouch.

Bryce?
