Page 27 of The Hate Date

She strokes my inner wrist with her finger. “It is. I’ve just had bad luck with powerful men. Figured I owe it to myself to date men who are the opposite of the type I’m usually attracted to. So I can find someone to make me happy.”

“Clover, are you trying to ask me something?” I roll toward her. Splay my hand on her waist.

She scoots closer so we’re chest to chest again. Nestles against my neck. “No. I don’t think so. I guess I’m just trying to live in this moment. Enjoy this perfect night with you. We’re running out of minutes, JJ. We might not see each other again.”

I tug her close. Squeeze her with my entire body. I’m about to say something when the elevator jerks and springs to life. We both stare at each other for a beat, wild-eyed and paralyzed before we spring into action.

Like teenagers caught in bed by their parents, Clover and I frantically try to get dressed. I manage to get my boxer briefs and Henley on. She, on the other hand, isn’t so lucky. I manage to jump in front of her when the doors open, but the three security guards who stand there stare at us like the naughty teens we are. Clothes spilling out into the foyer.

“Give us some privacy.” I point to the hallway. “Make sure no one is in the vicinity for at least fifteen minutes.”

They gape at me unbelievingly.

“Please.“ I put on my most authoritative CEO voice.

They do as I’ve asked. I tug on my jeans. Clover manages to pull herself mostly together, except for the pink bra. Her face is beet red. “Can you help?”

“Of course, sweetness.” I kiss her shoulder and she shows me how to tighten it.

She drapes her jacket over her shoulder. “Thanks, JJ.”

We stand there. Neither of us speak. Our eyes meet, then flick around the cab.

I spy the four used condoms and pick them up. “I’ll get rid of these.”

“Thank you.” She’s slipping away from me before my eyes.

I hold out my hand. “Come with me.”

“No, I don’t think that’s best.” Her shoulders slump. If she’s feeling how I do, we’re both flustered from our time in elevator utopia being so abruptly cut short.

I wiggle my fingers. “Just for a few minutes.”

She sighs and takes my hand. Dips to pick up her tote and I lead her down the hall to the production office. No one is here. I glance at the clock, it’s five in the morning. I’ll still have plenty of time to catch my flight.

When the door shuts behind us, I wrap her in my arms. Lean down and kiss her. “Last night was my favorite night I’ve ever had. That’s the truth. Thank you.”

“Mine too.” She smiles brightly.

“Everything that happened in that elevator was real.” I grip her face in my hands. “You know that, don’t you?”

She glances away.

“Clover?” I move my head around so she’s forced to look at me.

Her aqua eyes blink up at me. “It feels real. Now that we’re free, I also feel unbearably sad that you’re leaving. How did you go from being a stranger to my lover in a matter of hours?”

“Life is funny, isn’t it?” I press my lips to hers. We kiss slowly. Finally. “I’m going to think about this night for the rest of my life.”

Clover runs her knuckles lightly along my cheek. “I will too, JJ.”

We break apart. She watches me as I gather my things. “You heading to the airport?”

“I am.” I close the latch on my laptop bag. “I’ve got to stop by the hotel first.”

She tilts her head. “Hotel?”

Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.
