Page 46 of The Hate Date

The man’s a brilliant businessman. Ruthless negotiator. Devilishly handsome. World-class lover. He can have anything and anyone he wants. Somehow he’s decided it’s me.

What I haven’t figured out is why he wants me.

I mean, sex. Sure. We’re combustible together. He’s my fantasy in the dark of the night when I’m alone with my vibrator. Which, by the way, doesn’t come remotely close to the real thing.

Once you’ve had Joar’s attention focused on making you come, nothing else compares.

Don’t get me started on his cock.

“We’re here,” Joar’s driver, Victor, announces as he pulls up to a little studio on the ground floor of an apartment building on a quiet street in North Hollywood.

Joar peers out the window. “Pole dancing?”

“Yep. I’ve always wanted to try it.” I don’t bother waiting for Victor, I get out of the car and walk up to the door.

A slight woman in a unitard is waiting. “Hi. I’m Regan. You must be Clover. I’m such a fan.”

“Thank you, Regan. It’s lovely to meet you.” I’m tempted to follow her in, but I can’t help but look back to see if Joar’s behind me.

I nearly burst out laughing. The man in a bespoke suit is clearly terrified. Yet, trying to look enthusiastic. Failing miserably. This is totally why I wanted to go on a date with the guy I thought wrote that profile. It’s my test.

Now it’s JJ—Joar’s.

He jogs to catch up with me. “Well, this is not what I expected.”

“Wow, I surprised the great Joar Jacoby.” I flutter my eyelashes. “Meet Regan, our private pole dancing instructor.”

Regan assesses us. “Let’s get you changed. I have the clothes you ordered here.” She picks up a shopping bag, reaches in and hands me a bodysuit. “This is for you, Clover.” She rummages around and hands Joar a pair of board shorts. “You can make do with this today.”

There are two dressing rooms separated by a curtain. Joar holds the first one open for me. Once he’s situated in the room beside me, he finds his voice. “I’m gonna love seeing you twirl around that pole.”

“I’m going to laugh my ass off when you’re up there.” I neatly fold my dress and pull on my black bodysuit. Wow. It leaves nothing to the imagination. My nipples poke out like they’re trying to break free.

Joar steps out wearing nothing but the board shorts. Holy fucking hell. He’s even more ripped than the last time I saw him. Every muscle on his exposed skin is carved in marble. I can’t help but stare. He notices me ogling him and grins, so I roll my eyes and walk away.

He follows me into the studio, which is stark white but surrounded by mirrored walls. Ten poles are scattered evenly around the room, screwed into the ceiling and floor.

Regan gestures for us to sit. “Tonight is going to be challenging but exciting. Take it from me, hitting a move for the first time is the best feeling in the world.”

She stands and gracefully jumps up on the pole. Launches into a series of twirls and spins. Climbs up to the top, hooks her legs around the pole and plummets all the way down where she catches herself just before she hits the bottom.

I can’t help but jump up and cheer. “Omigod. Yes. I want to do that.”

“All I can think about is how much that’s going to hurt my junk.” Joar cups himself. “Should I have some protection on the goods?”

Regan laughs heartily. “We’ll start off slow, you’ll be fine.”

For the next twenty minutes, we hang upside down, propped up on our shoulders, forearms and heads as Regan shows us simple moves. When we master the basics on the floor, we both learn how to invert straddle, shoulder mount, and how to do a basic climb on the pole. In all my years of dance classes, I’ve never moved my body this way. It’s tough but liberating.

“I thought I was fit, but this is fucking hard.” Joar wipes sweat off his brow. We’re taking five before we move into the next phase of the lesson.

He’s so competitive. Mostly with himself, I realize. “You’re being a good sport, Joar. Thank you.”

“I’m having so much fun.” He looks almost boyish the way he smiles at my praise.

I have to admit, my heart softens. Just a smidge.

Regan joins us and directs a question at Joar. “Would you like to learn how to spot Clover?”
