“I’m not small,” Maxime grumbled, but his displeasure was only temporary, because at that very moment Ian swooped in and scooped him up in his arms. Maxime cried out excitedly and clung to his neck as he was carried to the outskirts of the crowd, where Geoffrey and Matthieu were waiting. All three of his parents gave him a kiss, then off Ian went to fetch the next whelp, making sure none of them hogged the spots closest to Sorin and Bertram for long.

“What are their names, Uncle Sorin?” asked Felix before he could be scooped up and taken away. The rest of the children joined him in asking his question, a chorus of, “Yeah!” and “What are their names?” quickly overtaking the room.

When all was quiet, Sorin looked at Bertram and nodded.

Bertram smiled at him, love in his eyes, and kissed Sorin on the cheek.

“We would like to introduce you to Davis, Stanton, Wells, and King,” he said, stroking each of the whelps on the head as he named them. When he was done, he set his hand on Sorin’s thigh and opened up their bond, letting Sorin feel the love in his heart.

Love for the whelps, but also, unending love for him.

“There is no telling what the future holds,” Bertram went on to say, speaking loudly enough to address the room at large, but his eyes on Sorin, and only Sorin. Gentle purple eyes. Eyes that had understood when no one else had, and that would forevermore. “But no matter what comes our way, our hope for them—and for all of you—is that they will always have the courage to do what is right, knowing even should the worst come to pass, they will always have a family to strengthen them and shower them in love.”

The whelps were too young to know it then, but as Sorin looked around the room, he knew they needn’t worry. They would never be alone. Never loveless. Never without somewhere to turn. Because in these men—these dragons—they had found a family.

And with them, Sorin was home.
