I slide my hand between my legs and rub myself off to the mental visuals. I’m already so turned on that it takes almost no time at all for me to come.

I pant against the pillow as my body relaxes afterward, but my mind is still in an uproar.

How did I ever get into this situation? It’s ridiculous.

William thinks I’m my sister. If he wants someone, it must be her.

The next morning,William wakes up before I do.

It’s Saturday, and for once he doesn’t go into his office. He’s working from home when I get up at just before nine.

He comes into the kitchen to get another cup of coffee as I’m sitting at the island with my coffee and my phone. He greets me in a normal manner, and I do the same.

There’s no mention of what happened last night. He’s acting like it never happened, and I pretend I’m not even aware.

It’s a relief. Almost entirely a relief. And if a tiny part of me is disappointed, I simply don’t listen to that small voice.

We have a cocktail party to attend this evening, so I have to prep myself mentally for the public outing. I start a couple of hours before we need to leave so I won’t be rushed getting dressed. I have a long shower and take my time with my hair, pulling it into a smooth chignon with a few loose strands framing my face so it looks a little softer. Then I spend longer than normal with my makeup, making my eyes smoky and my lips red.

I’m quite pleased with the results. I search Amber’s closet for a dress to wear, bored with the interminable whites and creams and pale grays she prefers. I finally land on a simple, elegant sheath in a silvery green that molds my figure.

What I would give for a bright color to wear.

I’m picking out jewelry when William comes out from the bathroom, freshly showered and wearing the black pants and white dress shirt of his suit.

He pulls to a stop and stares at me for several seconds.

I glance down at myself. “Am I okay?”

He clears his throat. “Gorgeous. You look gorgeous.”

My cheeks warm. I focus down at an emerald pendant on a gold chain I’m holding. Our dad designed it for our mom, and Amber must have kept it after he died. “Oh. Good. Thanks.”

William is still standing in the middle of the floor, barefoot and holding a silver tie. His eyes are running up and down my body.

Self-conscious, I turn toward the mirror and place the pendant at the base of my throat, reaching around to clip the chain in the back.

I’m so awkward that I fumble with the clasp. After a few seconds, William steps over and does it for me. His fingers brush against my skin, making me shiver.

He’s watching me in the mirror.

I dart several quick looks up, meeting his eyes in the reflection. “What?” I finally ask.

“Nothing. It just feels like…” He gives his head a shake.

“Like what?”

“Like I’ve never seen you before.” His voice is very thick.

Oh shit. “Oh.” I take a ragged breath. “Well, you have.”

“Yeah.”

He returns to normal after that, pulling on his tie, jacket, socks, shoes, and watch. We’re ready to go on time, and neither of us says anything at all.
