“Right?” I added quickly. “Makes me think it should be a pool day.”

“You love swimming, huh?” Travis asked me, and I blushed. Was he trying to make a sexual innuendo? I wasn’t sure exactly what it meant, but I also didn’t know every sexual connotation.

“Kinda.” I giggled. “I just like being in a bikini.” I ran my finger down the side of my neck and attempted to make eye contact with him. He looked at me for a few seconds, offered me a weak smile, and then turned back to Max. “Well, I’m going to go back to my sisters,” I said finally, trying to hide my annoyance. “I guess we will talk later.”

“Sure, sounds good,” he said, his eyes flashing back to me for a few seconds. I walked away from him, feeling super irritated. On the phone, he talked like he couldn’t wait to get his hands on me, and yet in person he acted like he didn’t give a shit. I knew he was doing that to throw the others off, but frankly I was over it. I was also finding him a tad boring in person. I wasn’t interested in hearing about his cases all the time. And he hadn’t even shown any excitement about me and my sisters talking about the store. I’d at least expected to him to ask me what they’d said. I’d hoped for a small hug, kiss on the cheek, a touch on the arm, any physical contact. How was it that he could jerk off to my photo, yet in person he didn’t act interested at all? He was playing the hot-cold game far too well. It was annoying. When I spoke to him later that night, I was going to hint to him that I didn’t appreciate how cold he was in person. I was going to need him to make me feel a little bit more special.

“You wanna go to the beach and get ice cream?” Harriet asked me as we walked to our cars. The barbecue had ended, and Travis had barely spoken two words to me.

“I was going to head home as I had a call tonight,” I said and then changed my mind. I wasn’t going to rush home to have phone sex with Travis if he was going to act all cold. “But you know what? I could go for some raspberry cheesecake ice cream from Sweet Scoop.” I nodded enthusiastically. “And then we’ll head to Manasota Key?”

“Yup.” She smiled. “Unless you want to go to Boca Grande? We can watch the sunset by the lighthouse.”

“Ooh, I do love Boca Grande.” I thought for a moment. The drive to Boca Grande was longer, but it also felt like a more private beach. A lot of really rich people lived on Boca Grande, but they usually only came for a week or two in the Winter, so it was never really busy.

“I’ll drive and pay for the toll,” Harriet added, and I laughed. She knew me too well. “I take it from your laugh that that’s a yes?”

“You got it. Do you mind if I drive my car home and then you just drive me from there?”

“Of course not.” She grinned. “Finn texted me, so I’ll call him on the drive to your house so you don’t have to listen later.”

“Perfect,” I said, grateful I didn’t have to hear the two of them go on and on about who loved who more. Sometimes their conversation was extremely nauseating. “See you at my place.” I got into my car and started the engine. As I pulled away, my phone started ringing, and I saw Lily’s name popping up on the screen via Bluetooth. I pressed on.

“Hey, girl, what’s going on?”

“Not much, I’m just at home relaxing in the bath.” She let out a long sigh. “I’m tired, girl.”

“Yeah, I bet you are.”

“Not just from the sex,” she squeaked out. “Though that was exhausting as well.”

“I can’t believe you slept with Andrew and his roommate,” I exclaimed, wondering how Lily was feeling now the excitement of the night was wearing off. “Are you doing okay?” I asked her softly. “No regrets or anything.”

“No regrets.” She paused. “I mean, I feel a little weird. I’m not going to lie. I’m not the sort of girl that has random sex with random men, but I got caught up in the moment, and they both made me feel so beautiful and wanted.”

“You are beautiful, Lily,” I said firmly. “And lots of men want you.”

“It never used to feel like that.” She sighed. “I thought I was going to be the last virgin left on Earth.”

“Well, that award goes to me.”

“But guys want you… In fact, lots of guys want you.” I could hear the water splashing in the background. “What’s going on with Travis, by the way?”

“He’s being really hot on the phone and really cold in person, and it’s getting on my last nerves. Like, what am I? Your secret sexual plaything?”

“Oh man, that sucks.”

“We’re talking on the phone tonight, though.” I giggled slightly, due to nervousness. “I think we’re going to have phone sex.”

“Whoa.” Lily sounded shocked. “It’s moving fast.”

“I know, but he’s so horny for it.” I laughed. “I want him to start to feel more comfortable around me in person.”I sighed. “I mean, he’s so fun and interesting on the phone. He really seems to know me and get me. But then in person, all he does is talk about himself and then give me weird looks when I talk about my life.”

“I don’t like that,” Lily blurted out. “I know you like him. And I agree that he’s hot, but I don’t love his personality for you, Chelsea.”

“I mean, I feel like he’s not letting us see the real him in person,” I mumbled, hoping I was correct. “But hey, I just got home and I’m about to get into Harriet’s car as we going to Boca Grande to watch the sunset. Can I call you back later?”
