Chandler waited for Brooke to walk away, then he grinned at me. “Don’t be jealous. We set up this date a couple of weeks ago.”

“I couldn’t care less.” I sniffed and held my head up. “As far as I’m concerned, you and your brothers are the scum of the earth.”

“Uh-huh.” His eyes twinkled as he looked over at Harriet. He turned back to me and then whispered into my ear. “I wish I was going into the ocean with you.” His breath was warm, and I felt the tip of his tongue trailing down my neck as he stepped back. “You have a good night.”

“I don’t wish you the same.” I jumped away from him. “Come on, Harriet, let’s go.” My body was hot and bothered, and I couldn’t believe that he’d been so forward with me.

“What did he have to say?” Harriet asked curiously as we made our way closer to the water.

“Nothing important.” I shook my head as I watched Chandler run into the water and start splashing Brooke. She squealed and jumped up and down before grabbing onto his shoulders. “He’s a pig,” I said as I stared at his naked chest. He looked like a Greek god in the fading sunlight, and I knew that the image of him in the water was going to stay with me for a while. All of a sudden, I wished I’d brought my phone. I wanted to text Travis. I wanted him to text me dirty things. I wanted to focus on him and not my ex-boyfriend’s older brother. But at least I had that evening to look forward to.

“You up?”The text message came in at midnight on the dot, and I grabbed my phone eagerly.

“Barely.”I pulled my sheets up and lay there waiting for him to respond.

“I wasn’t sure if you were going to respond after today.”Ah, so maybe he’d sensed that I was peeved at his cold attitude.

“I mean, I get that we have to play it cool,”I typed back, not wanting to go off on him right away.

“You were being particularly cold and snappy today.”I was?

“Actually, I was going to say that to you. I thought maybe you were no longer interested.”

“Oh, I’m very interested. In only you.”

“Okay.”

“I just wanted to clarify that. After today.”

“I’m glad to hear that. :)”

“Can I call you?”

“Sure,”I texted back and waited. The phone rang five seconds later. I let it ring three times, and then I picked up.

“Hello,” I said, feeling almost breathless.

“Hey.” His voice was deep. “We’re actually talking.”

“We are,” I said softly, leaning back into the pillows. “It’s nice to talk on the phone.”

“It is.” He chuckled. “We’re playing with fire, of course, but I think I’m okay with that.”

“Me too.” I giggled. “I’m very okay with that.”

“So how was your day?”

“Nice. I spoke to Harriet and Polly, like I was telling you, and they’re interested in opening the store with me.”

“That’s amazing.”

“Right? I wanted to tell you more earlier, but I figured you were busy.”

“You can text or call me at any time.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s the best way for now,” I said. I didn’t want to tell that I’d wanted to have the conversation in person. I didn’t want to push it too hard. “So what are you doing?”
