“Wanna come over?”

“No,” I said quickly, and he burst out laughing.

“Hey, I gotta go,” he said. “I’ll talk to you later.” He hung up before I had a chance to respond, and I frowned at the phone. I was slightly disappointed that he hadn’t wanted to talk to me more. My phone rang again, and an unknown number popped up on my screen. I debated not answering it but decided to see who it was.

“Hello,” I spoke in an English accent, in case it was some weirdo.

“Hello, can I speak to Chelsea, please?” The male voice sounded slightly familiar. “This is Travis Chandler.”

“Travis?” My jaw dropped as I realized who it was. “This is Chelsea. How’s it going?”

“Good, good. I hope this is a good time to call.”

“Yeah, it’s fine. I was just getting ready for bed.”

“Aw, cool. I wanted to say that Max informed me you’d be coming camping with us this weekend.”

“Yes, can’t keep me away from a tent,” I lied. I was already dreading the backache.

“Awesome.” He sounded happy. “I’m looking forward to some cool hikes and early sunrise walks.”

“Oh yeah. I love hiking. In fact, if I could hike every day, I would. Sometimes I just go online so I can add hikes to my bucket list. Hello, Everest. Hello, Kilimanjaro. Am I right?”

“I would love to climb Kilimanjaro,” he said excitedly. “In fact, I was planning a climb and safari next year… Maybe we can plan a group trip.” My heart stopped at his words. That sounded like the worst group trip ever. My idea of a fun trip was going to Aruba and then spending the night on a booze cruise dancing and drinking the night away.

“Yeah, maybe,” I said, hoping I didn’t sound too unexcited.

“I know, I’m getting a little ahead of myself,” he said, laughing. “I just wanted you to know I was taken aback when you said you’d thought you were texting me and that we were…” He cleared his throat and coughed.

“Sorry, what?” I asked.

“Well, you know…sexting.” He sounded slightly embarrassed, and my cheeks burned red. “I didn’t realize you’d thought we’d been intimate on the phone.” He laughed. “I hope the fake me didn’t say anything too inappropriate.” My face flushed as I thought about all the things that Chandler had told me he was going to do to me.

“No, he was a perfect gentleman,” I lied. “I mean, most of them time.” I laughed. A perfect gentleman wouldn’t have been sexting me in the first place. The doorbell rang, and I froze. Had my landlord come early? I got off the bed and headed toward the front door.

“Oh well, I’m not a perfect gentleman.” Travis laughed. “In fact, I—”

“Hold on a second, someone is at my door,” I said as I opened the front door. My jaw dropped when I saw Chandler standing there with a portable AC unit. I frowned as he gave me a goofy grin.

“Surprise.” He held his hands up and did a little dance. “I thought this would help you stay cool.”

“Uhm,” I said, and I remembered Travis was still on the phone. “Hello,” I spoke into the phone while still looking at Chandler.

“Everything okay?” Travis asked. “I was just looking up hikes for this weekend.”

“Oh, cool,” I said, staring at Chandler, who was looking mighty fine in his blue jeans and black shirt. I licked my lips nervously as I ushered him in with the fan. “I’m on the phone,” I mouthed to Chandler, who nodded.

“I had a feeling.” He grinned, and I just shook my head at him. “Where do you want it?”

“The bedroom,” I said. “This way.” I walked toward my bedroom.

“What’s going on?” Travis asked in my ear, sounding confused.

“Oh, sorry, my AC stopped working, and a friend brought me a portable AC to stay cool.” I wondered if he would offer to have me come over, like Chandler had. I wondered if he would offer to get me a hotel room or something.

“That sucks.” He cleared his throat. “So I found a ten-mile hike and a fifteen-mile. Which would you prefer?”

“Huh?” I was shocked that he hadn’t offered me any solutions.
