“Come on, love, you have to be ready foranything.” He hums as his golden wings cut through the sky like a blade of light. His black winter attire makes him seem almost like a normal civilian. It’s easy to forget our roles from this high in the sky.

I look down at my hands, wondering when these happy days will pass. Because nothing lasts forever and I’m too gloom and doom to enjoy it while it lasts.

“Do you ever wish we could just go back to Moro’s cottage?”

I don’t know why I ask, but it’s been bothering me. I have no idea how he actually feels about the past.

He considers me, his amethyst eyes taking in every inch of my face. “Yeah, I do. I miss training with you, and as much as I hate to admit it, Kastian too.” I smile at him, nostalgia getting the better of me and twisting my aching heart.

“Was Ieverthe sun to you?” he asks. I quirk a brow at him because I’m not sure what he’s asking. “Was I ever able to warm your soul… like you did mine?”

I’m stunned. For a second I just stare at him.

“Yeah. You were.” I gaze at the winter lands before us and manage a bittersweet smile as I take in the orange-lit snowbanks. The three suns wave farewell as the moons crest over the mountaintops. “But I have new ones now.”

Our flight back is quiet. I try to focus on anything except our silence. I’ve really improved my flight speed tremendously and my gimp wing doesn’t hold me back at all anymore.

Nothing will.

Violet planned another one of her dinners for this evening and I’m dreading that I have to attend, but at least I’ll hopefully be able to see Kastian. It’s the first one since she told me her story…

I strip and put on my evening dress, tight black silk that hugs all my curves perfectly. Rune pulls on his black sweater and leans against the wall, watching me as I slip on my black heels.

Thank gods Arulius at least gives me the proper clothing for these dinners or I’d die of embarrassment. I wonder what Kastian is wearing to it.

Maybe I can meet him beforehand and talk to him.

I side-eye Rune. He’s probably going to follow me no matter what I say, so I don’t bother even trying to talk him out of it.

“Do you know where Kastian’s room is?” I comb my dark hair out and smile with how healthy it looks. Even my face has regained a lot of its shimmer back.

Rune nods and cocks his head to the side.

“I just want to talk to him before dinner… Last time we spoke he was pretty upset with me.”

He smirks and leads the way into the hall.

Of course Violet has Kastian staying in the most extravagant part of the castle.

I eye the walls. They’re impeccably clean and the marbled ceilings are etched with gorgeous drawings of creatures and gods. As beautiful as it is, I still love my end of the castle better. Worn-down stones and vines are my thing—they remind me of Caziel and Moro’s cute cottage.

We get to an enormous black door. Rune leans against the wall and nods his head to it.

“Can you stay out here? I want to talk to him alone.” I brush his cheek with my hand as I open the door and slip inside.

It’s warm in here, and the drapes are all pulled. I smile. It reminds me a lot of the first time I realized what I was. When I drank Kastian’s beautiful blood.

The floors are heated and it takes me a second to let my eyes adjust to the dark before I make out the shape of a bed in the far corner of his huge room.

My lips open to call out for him, but I freeze once I hear the sound of metal cutting skin. Goosebumps cover my skin and my voice gets caught in my throat.

What the fuck?

I pause and hold my breath so I can hear better, but my heart pounds so loudly I feel like I’m going to pass out.

Someone is being badly hurt… tortured… cut and suffering like I did for all those months. Then I hear the blood spilling into a bucket.
