Then I feel it too—or rather the absence of it.

I’ve been so focused on Rune and fixing his hurt that I’ve almost forgotten about my own. The way he’s healed me in return has a lump forming in my throat. It fills my heart with an inexplicable amount of love.

His love.

Moro takes a long sip of his tea and coughs a few times. “I never thought I’d see this one again though. His brother must have saved him.”

“Kol?” I say with more venom than I intended.

He nods. “I don’t believe anyone to truly be evil. None are born that way anyway, but Kol has goodness in his heart. As does Violet.” He leans back in his chair and stares at his living room wall.

Wren frowns. “No, I'm pretty sure Kol and Violet are evil. Don’t forget Arulius either.”

Kastian chimes in from behind me. “They took everything from us… even our identities. Violet did everything she could to destroy the Rhythm—look how close she got to succeeding.”

Moro smiles nostalgically, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “All of them have stories of their own. Just as each of you carry a story, and I do. None of us aretrulyevil.”

I flatten my lips. I don’t want to admit it, but he has a point—considering Talia was a fucking evil bitch and I’m technically her, so…

Maybe we all can change—we just need guidance and second chances.

Wishes for our former selves. The ones that are so broken by trauma.

“Rune… I’m so sorry you’ve been hurting for so long. I wish I could take it all away.” I press my forehead to his and he quickly shakes his head, looking up at me with tenderness seeping from his soul.

I wonder if he feels the same love that I do for him.

I want it so badly—more than anything in the realms. I want his heart and pain to be shared with me so that we can carry the burden together.

Wren coughs. “We’re all still here.”

I roll my eyes but rub my nose against Rune’s. “My drop of blood in the snow. I guess I helped you heal. You healed me too, so well that I didn’t even know it.”

Moro stands and walks over to us, helping me and Rune to our feet. “You two were always meant to meet… I see it now.” He looks from me to the Dreadius slowly, in thought.

Wren walks over to stand next to Kastian and quirks a brow. “What do you mean?” He studies us as if he’s trying to see what Moro does. My dark-winged Eostrix tilts his head with curiosity too.

“Rune is the God of Peace. He keeps the harmony of the realms and is a vital part of the Rhythm.”

We all gasp in unison.

I’ve been wondering what other gods are a part of the Rhythm since reading about it. I never fathomed Rune could be one.

Here in front of me. We are harmony itself together, blending perfectly like two sides of the same wing. The pull I’ve been feeling for him has been our Rhythm, desperately wanting to join and rekindle the realms.

Rune is my equal—Kastian my opposite. Each holding significance beyond my understanding.

The God of Peace. Hidden so well, but against all odds we managed to find one another. I wonder if this is the first time we’ve met. I think of all the lifetimes we’ve left behind us, how many more we’ll share.

“Is he… Are we…” I’m at a total loss for fucking words.

“You two are the single most important parts of the Rhythm. Yes, death has his part to play, but you two keep the humans alive, keep them happy and at peace. Without life and peace, there is only death and war.”

Goosebumps shiver across my skin.War.Bruno’s words slither from my mind and wrap my consciousness in their darkness.

You are cursed. Run. Run. Run. Run.

“Then… that means North is a Rhythm God too.”
