Our friendship was strained when we first met, ruined by his betrayal, and then we were enemies. But perhaps now we can stand together for our one cause.

For our precious Elodie.

“Hope you didn’t waste all your pathetic aura on me,” he hisses as he wipes his bloody face with his torn sleeve.

I scoff at him. “I haven’t even gotten started yet.”

Elodie’s smile is wicked as she lunges forward at us, her wings carrying her faster than I can fly. I hardly dodge in time and Arulius barely deflects her viscous crimson arc. It shatters his bone armor like it’s nothing and he curses as he takes to the sky after her.

“Fuck!” Wren shouts as he chases after them on foot. His Cypress vines tremble from the ground and it vibrates beneath my feet with his rage. I dart into the sky after them just as I hear Violet scream and Moro trying to gather warriors below.

What a fucking mess.

A godsdamn mess.

Kastian

The clouds are turning red as drops of blood start to pelt down on me from the sky. The God of War truly has returned. My skin’s crawling with goosebumps but I ignore it as I try to find any trace of Arulius and Elodie.

It doesn’t take long because I hear their aura blades clashing against each other before I even reach the clouds.

Shit, how are we going to get her back—how can we undothis?

I break through the clouds and am surrounded by golden bolts of lightning rippling through the air space. Every hair on the back of my neck rises and my skin feels charged.

Arulius moves at speeds that I can hardly track and Elodie evades every bolt, punch, and cut he throws at her. My teeth are hot with fear and my heart’s pounding out of my chest. She’s going to beat him.

We don’t even stand a chance. We never stood a chance—not againstthis.

Arulius roars, blood spilling from his mouth as Elodie plunges her blades deep into his chest cavity.

“Arulius!” I shout but he pulls away from her swiftly and coughs through ragged breaths as his wild purple gaze finds mine. He’s done… If he doesn’t heal he’ll fucking die.

He raises his hand in the sky and all the bolts of electricity connect with it as one giant force of his golden aura. “You have to get her back… You have to, Kastian!” Tears spill from the golden god and he throws his lightning in her direction. A million beams of light and static roar through the airspace at her. “I’m so fucking sorry!” he wails as the streams of electric yellow and white hit their target. The heat from the attack hangs in the air and the scent of flesh fills me, making me nearly vomit.

Arulius tilts his head back as the last of his energy is spent and then falls to the earth below. I catch his glimmering golden feathers from the corner of my eye but don’t dare let my gaze lift from Elodie.

Fuck. Wren, I hope you fucking catch him.

This is far from over. I can feel it in my feathers.

“That was it? Weak, soweak. Please tell me you’re not that pathetic too, Borvon.” Elodie’s dual voice haunts me. She’s unscathed by the largest attack I’ve ever seen and the only burn she has is on her right hand, where she focused his attack.

I swallow. I don’t want to fight her, I really don’t want to fucking fight her, but… maybe Wren and Moro can aid me if I can lure her to the ground.

My wings press tightly to my back as I dive into the clouds and plummet toward the ground. The south field is nearly empty and I know the others will see us over here. I need to get her away from Nesbrim. There are so many citizens that can’t protect themselves. I turn back to see if Arulius landed okay and find him secured between Wren and a group of Nesbrim Eostrixes.

Cowards. Of course they won’t join the fight. They won’t do anything unless Violet leads them, and she’s in shambles.

I duck and roll as I meet the ground and I’m fucking glad I do. Elodie is right above me and would have stomped my brains in with the way she crashes into the ground behind me. Her crimson aura dissipates as she charges at me.

I pull a black blade from the earth and thank the dead creatures below for lending me their aura. I whip it in an upward slice and it slashes the entire right side of her face. I wince and my heart falters, but I fly back until I’m a good ten feet from her.

Elodie laughs maniacally as blood rushes down her torso. I’ve destroyed her right eye and I’m struggling to hold myself together at the sight of her being ruined like this. I don’t want to hurt her.

“Not bad, Borvon, but I’m finished playing now.” Her remaining eye dulls with boredom. I flick my attention behind her as Wren, Moro, and Rune appear to help.
